Marla Shauer, Ph.D., C.N.M.
Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor
Marla Shauer is a health sciences assistant clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. A certified nurse midwife, Shauer’s provider background spans 24 years and includes inpatient, outpatient and freestanding birth center care for women and people seeking reproductive care, gynecologic, postpartum and birth care across the U.S.

She utilizes a collaborative midwifery lens, as well as intersectional feminist frameworks, to provide teaching and clinical and simulation experiences drawing from a base of trauma-informed care.
Prior to joining the School of Nursing, Shauer worked across multiple organizations in California, Virginia, Washington D.C., and New York, both in private practice, as well as in several Northern California FQHC’s and a local birth center, as well as at several large hospitals providing midwifery and nursing care. Shauer was also a research coordinator and study nurse at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where she enrolled participants in Perinatal HIV studies for the International Network, IMPAACT, in collaboration with Children’s National Medical Center and NICHD.
Shauer completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis with a designated emphasis in feminist theory and research. She received a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from George Mason University and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from SUNY Empire State, Jerusalem. She is a board member of the local Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter of ZEAL, or Zeta-Eta- At Large as the Treasurer, and a member of the California Nurse Midwives Association and American College of Nurse Midwives.
