Charis Ong, M.S., R.N.
Assistant Director for the Master's Entry Program in Nursing and Assistant Clinical Professor
Charis Ong is the Assistant Director for the Master's Entry Program in Nursing and assistant clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. She serves as medical-surgical faculty for the Master's Entry in Nursing Program and also teaches within the school’s other graduate-degree programs.
In addition to her nine years of experience as a clinical nurse at UC Davis Medical Center, she taught for five years as a clinical instructor for prelicensure nursing programs throughout the Sacramento, California region. She is passionate about nursing education with a vision toward transformational change in health care.
She joined the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing as a clinical instructor in 2018. She also served as an adjunct instructor for California State University, Sacramento and Samuel Merritt University. While at UC Davis, she educated and supervised students in their clinical rotations as they provided direct care to patients of varying diagnoses in the medical-surgical and intensive care units.
As an instructor, she provided didactic content, taught students in the performance of key clinical skills, and presented students with case-based learning opportunities. She also developed an innovative training tool based on game-theory and involved the concept of an escape room. The escape room required first-year nursing students to competently perform clinical skills to obtain key patient information needed to piece together a puzzle key. This training tool was implemented during the last day of their class to help solidify the clinical skills and critical thinking they had practiced throughout the quarter.
Ong completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at California State University, Sacramento in 2012. She then earned in 2018 a Master of Science in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership from the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. While earning her master’s degree, she also completed the Health Professions Educator Graduate Academic Certificate Program to better prepare herself for a nursing education role.
