Simulation Environments

The simulated hospital and surgical simulation environments are designed to work together to support progression across the continuum of care. Learners can develop procedural and technical skills in the surgical simulation setting and apply those skills in complex, team-based scenarios within the simulated hospital.

This integrated approach reflects real-world clinical practice by combining:

  • Technical skill acquisition
  • Procedural competency
  • Clinical decision-making
  • Interprofessional collaboration

By aligning these environments, UC Davis Health provides a comprehensive simulation experience that prepares learners for safe, effective patient care.

Simulated Hospital

We incorporate a wide range of advanced simulation tools to create a simulated hospital environment that is ideal for practicing patient encounters, medical procedures and teamwork.

The simulation center is highly versatile and can replicate multiple care settings simultaneously, including:

  • A resuscitation bay
  • An operating room
  • A multi-patient ward
  • A working clinic

Additional capabilities support immersive learning and evaluation, including:

  • Real-time and post-session video recording
  • One-way observation areas
  • Access to electronic health records

The simulated hospital supports a wide range of educational and training activities, such as:

  • New staff orientation
  • Interprofessional team training (on-site and telehealth)
  • Disaster response and mass casualty training
  • Clinical pathways development
  • Competency assessment and continuing medical education

This environment enables learners to practice clinical decision-making, communication and teamwork in realistic, dynamic patient care scenarios.

Surgical Simulation

The surgical simulation program at UC Davis Health is accredited as Level I Comprehensive Education Institute by the American College of Surgeons. It provides advanced training for health care professionals to develop technical skills, improve clinical decision-making and enhance patient safety through hands-on surgical simulation.

The center features a fully functional operating suite and a wide range of simulation technologies, including:

  • Laparoscopic, endoscopic, endovascular and robotic simulators
  • Virtual reality trainers for procedural practice
  • Specialized adult and pediatric task trainers

Learners also have access to:

  • High-fidelity mannequins for resuscitation training
  • Devices for anesthesia skill development
  • Comprehensive endovascular simulators supporting multiple procedures

Additional training opportunities include:

  • Virtual reality platforms for developing motor skills and dexterity
  • Standardized patient and cadaver-based course supplementation

These resources allow learners to develop and maintain technical proficiency, explore new procedures and prepare for certification and clinical practice.

Testing for FES and FLS

We are recognized as a certified test center for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), offering certification exams for:

These tests are a joint educational offering of SAGES and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
