About Our Research

Founded in 2024 by Manpreet K. Singh, MD, MS, the Mood Disorders Research Program at UC Davis Health is dedicated to advancing understanding and treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, and related conditions in youth, young adults and adults.

Our research focuses on unraveling the complexities of the origins and pathways of psychiatric disorders that start during childhood, and finding ways to protect and preserve function throughout lifespan.

We investigate the safety and efficacy of both established treatments—like medication and psychotherapy—and cutting-edge interventions such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation.

What We Study

Our research focuses on:

  • Depression and bipolar disorder in youth and young adults
  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Novel therapies and clinical interventions
  • Neurobiology of mood disorders
  • Placebo response and treatment optimization

Our team is deeply involved in translational research—bridging science with real-world care. We are also actively expanding our collaborative network of psychiatrists, psychologists, researchers and trainees.

Collaborate With Us

The Mood Disorders Research Program welcomes:

  • Clinical Referrals – For evaluation or participation in research
  • Trainees and Students – Opportunities to work on groundbreaking studies
  • Community Partners – Collaborations to expand access to care
