Residency Program Director
Gillian Soles, M.D., F.A.O.A., F.A.A.O.S.
Associate Professor
Gillian Soles graduated from Tufts University with a B.S. in Biology and earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her Orthopaedic residency at Boston University, followed by a fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at UC Davis Medical Center. She then pursued a second fellowship in Hip and Pelvis reconstruction and direct anterior total hip replacement with Joel Matta, M.D., at Saint John's Hospital. Soles began her academic career at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she specialized in fracture care, particularly pelvic and acetabular fractures, direct anterior total hip replacement, and revision hip surgery. She is an active member of the OTA, a fellow of the AAOS, fellow of the AOA, AO faculty, and AO North America Trauma Education Committee member.
Soles is passionate about resident and fellow education and curriculum development. Her research interests, for which she has a national reputation, include outcomes following pelvic and acetabular fractures and the treatment of femoral neck fractures. During her leisure time, she loves spending time with her husband and their Labrador retriever, Wellie. She also loves hiking, alpine and backcountry skiing, and trail running.
Associate Residency Program Director
Nicole Friel is an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with UC Davis Health and Shriners Children's Northern California. She specializes in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, taking care of non-operative and operative conditions, including performing arthroscopic and open procedures on the knee and shoulder. She has a particular interest in shoulder instability, knee ligament reconstruction, and cartilage restoration.
Friel earned her medical degree at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she graduated with honors. While completing a residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Pittsburgh, she was awarded the most outstanding graduating chief resident award. She completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Rush University Medical Center. On the academic front, Friel has authored multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in major orthopedic and sports medicine journals and also numerous book chapters. She loves teaching medical students and residents who aspire to be successful physicians.
Friel enjoys taking care of all her patients, including many athletes. She has served as the team physician for multiple high school and collegiate teams and has assisted in the care of professional team members, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Bulls. Her primary goal is to find the best way to return her young patients to being active and healthy.
