How to Apply

The UC Davis School of Medicine admissions timeline runs from May through July of the following year and includes four main steps: primary application, secondary application, interview and final decision.

Step 1: Primary Application + PREview® Exam

Submit your primary application through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).

  • AMCAS application opens: May 1
  • Earliest submission date: May 26
  • Deadline: October 1 at 11:59 p.m. EST (8:59 p.m. PST)
  • All materials must be received by the deadline; extensions are not granted 

AAMC PREview® Exam

  • Required for M.D. applicants
  • Exam window April – September
    • Important note: UC Davis School of Medicine exam deadline is September 30 even though AAMC PREview exam® is available through October.
  • Assesses pre-professional competencies for medical school readiness 
  • Applicants who do not complete the PREview® exam will not be further considered for admissions 

AAMC PREview® exam NOT required for:

  • M.D./Ph.D. program applicants 
  • Huwighurruk scholars

Step 2: Secondary Application (By Invitation Only)

Selected applicants are invited to complete a secondary application, which includes:

  • Essays and activities 
  • Program of interest selection (see below) 
  • Letters of recommendation (3-6) 
  • $120 application fee (non-refundable)

Applications are reviewed holistically, and interview invitations are sent on a rolling basis starting in July.

Step 3: Interviews (By Invitation Only)

The School of Medicine uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format to assess experiences and attributes relevant to a career in medicine.

  • MMI is a closed-file (blinded) interview approach
  • Interviews are typically held mid-August through early April 
  • Interviews are conducted virtually
  • Typically on Mondays and Fridays

Step 4: Admissions Decision

Decisions are released on a rolling basis:

  • Acceptances: October 15 – July 15 
  • Waitlist decisions: May 1 – July 15
  • Final decisions: within 30-45 days post-interview 

Application Update Policy

  • No application updates are accepted after submission 
  • Exceptions: major changes may be considered (e.g., citizenship status, nationally recognized award recipient)

  • Undergraduate grades, grade trends, and course load
  • Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score
  • Performance in a post-baccalaureate and/or graduate degree program

Who is considered an international applicant?

You are considered an international applicant if you require a visa to live and study in the United States.

If you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, you are considered a domestic applicant—even if you currently live outside the United States.

Financial Requirements

International applicants must demonstrate the ability to fully fund their medical education:

  • Complete the School of Medicine Financial Statement 
  • Provide documentation of sufficient financial support 

Important notes:

  • Non-U.S. residents are not eligible for U.S. financial aid 
  • Financial aid is not available after arrival at UC Davis 
     

You should have a reliable, continuous funding plan in place for the entire duration of your program before applying or enrolling.

Students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status are encouraged to apply. UC Davis continues to support DACA recipients in pursuing careers in medicine and the health professions.

In order to comply with federal regulations regarding professional licensure, UC Davis School of Medicine is required to make the following disclosures.  

All applicable UC Davis School of Medicine academic programs prepare students to be licensed and practice medicine in California. We have not determined whether our programs meet requirements for professional licensure or eligibility to practice medicine in other states. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to confirm program and license eligibility outside of California.
