Dermatologic Surgery

Our department has four fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons on staff.  Mohs surgery is performed at our C Street location and at the Mather Veterans Affairs (VA) facility.  General excisional surgery is performed at all of our sites. Residents rotate through three blocks of surgery every year.

Dermatopathology

We have three dermatopathologists at our C Street location and one at the Mather VA facility. At C Street, our dermatopathology service is located on-site, allowing you to review patient slides or consult with dermatopathologists just steps away. This on-site access also enhances the convenience and effectiveness of didactic training.

Pediatric Dermatology

Smita Awasthi, M.D., is our fellowship-trained pediatric dermatologist. She has clinics at both C Street and Cadillac Drive, and covers inpatient pediatric consultations, too.

Inpatient Consult Service

Our inpatient consultation service is active and well-staffed, with two attendings who specialize in inpatient dermatology. Residents rotate through this service annually, and all notable cases are presented at grand rounds or during Clinical-Pathologic Correlation (CPC) sessions.

Cosmetic Dermatology

Jayne Joo, M.D., directs our cosmetic surgery service at our Cadillac Drive location. This encompasses a full range of procedures, including fillers, botulinum toxin, surgical procedures and lasers. In addition, we offer periodic evening teaching sessions where residents recruit patients and inject donated materials (fillers and botulinum toxin) at no charge to the patient.

Hair Disorders and Multicultural Dermatology

Oma Agbai, M.D., runs our specialty clinics devoted to hair disorders and multicultural dermatology.

Autoimmune Skin Diseases and Rheumatology-Dermatology

Dermatologists Alain Brassard, M.D., Samuel Hwang, M.D., Ph.D., and Danielle M. Tartar, M.D., Ph.D., direct a clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of various autoimmune skin diseases.

Immunobullous Disease and Complex Medical Dermatology

Emanual Maverakis, M.D., directs a clinic for patients living with difficult-to-manage immunobullous diseases, as well as patients living with complex medical dermatologic problems requiring aggressive and innovative treatment approaches.

Contact Dermatitis

Peggy A. Wu, M.D., M.P.H., directs our active contact dermatitis specialty clinic at our Cadillac Drive location, which offers extensive patch testing capabilities. Apra Sood, M.D., at the Mather Veterans Affairs (VA) facility is also a national expert on contact dermatitis.

Resident Continuity Clinic

Our resident continuity clinic is held every other Thursday. We break the residents up into five groups (each with three residents and one attending). The residents follow the same cohort of patients over the entire three-year residency. We rotate the attendings every six months to expose residents to a variety of treatment approaches.

Outside Specialties

We have relationships with other departments and periodically send residents to other clinics or conferences, such as the genetics clinic and the vascular malformations multidisciplinary conference.

Elective Opportunities

The department provides residents with three weeks of elective time to explore clinical opportunities of interest beyond our department.

Volunteer Clinics

UC Davis Health is affiliated with a number of student-run clinics throughout the Sacramento region. Residents are encouraged to volunteer and provide specialty care to these underserved populations.
