Surgical Outcomes Research Group
2020 – 2021 Request for Proposals
In the interests of fostering productivity within the department, the Surgical Outcomes Research Group (ORG) is currently soliciting proposals for funding of surgery-related health services or outcomes studies. Proposals can involve any surgery-related clinical topic. "Outcomes research" is interpreted broadly to include: comparative effectiveness research; patient-centered outcomes research; quality measurement and improvement; cost effectiveness and efficiency research; healthcare policy research; and healthcare disparities research. The goal of the funding is to increase academic productivity (publications and presentations) and specifically work that has a high likelihood of resulting in extramural funding.
Awards up to $5,000 will be granted to selected recipients. The awards are intended primarily for analytical/biostatistical effort but may also be used for dataset expenses and other research services (e.g., translation of research materials, community engagement services). The awards cannot be used for salary support of faculty or a trainee. Up to $1,500 of the award can be used to support travel expenses related to presentation of funded work. Proof of manuscript submission will be required to receive reimbursement for travel expenses. In exceptional circumstances, amounts greater than $5,000 may be awarded on a case-by-case basis but will require appropriate justification.
Submissions are currently being accepted on a quarterly basis. May 1, 2020, August 1, 2020, November 1, 2020, and February 1, 2021.
Eligibility
Proposals must involve a Department of Surgery faculty member as the Principal Investigator or Co-PI, and this individual should be an active member of ORG. Faculty who are not yet members of ORG but wish to submit a proposal are strongly encouraged to join and actively participate in ORG.
Information on how to become a member of ORG can be found here: http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/surgery/outcomes_research.html
Department of Surgery residents and other trainees are encouraged to contribute to the proposed projects, but proposals should be submitted by the faculty Principal Investigator.
Application Components
Applicants will be required to complete an ORG Application for Research Support, including:
- A 2 page project summary to include background, planned methodology, anticipated results, relevance to extramural funding, and budget. Funding Application [Word]
- NIH biographical sketch (4 pages) for the Principal Investigator (see here)
Award Requirements
Upon completion of awarded projects, recipients will be expected to submit an abstract to the annual UC Davis Department of Surgery Research Symposium.
Awarded applicants should list the Department of Surgery Outcomes Research Group as a funding source on scholarly products related to the funded work.
For proposals that involve the purchase of datasets, recipients should plan, to the extent possible, to acquire the datasets in such a manner that they can be shared with other investigators, conditional upon compliance with data use agreements and IRB approval.
As noted above, proof of manuscript submission is required for reimbursement of travel expenses up to $1,500.
Unused funds will be reclaimed with 1 year from date of award.
