The Transplant Fellow will participate in the evaluation of potential recipients and living donors. The Fellow will assess new patients and discuss the surgical and medical process and expectations of transplantation. The Fellow will participate in weekly transplant selection meetings to assess potential candidates.

Fellows will direct daily rounds and manage transplant recipient care with the help of a multidisciplinary team, which consists of the transplant attending, surgical fellow, surgical residents, nurse practitioners, nephrology colleagues, transplant nurse coordinators, transplant pharmacists, social workers and dieticians. 

Overnight and weekend primary call for transplant patients is covered by night shift residents. No in-house call is required, although fellows are expected to be available to night float surgical residents for questions.

Under the direction of the surgical faculty, the fellow will act as the primary surgeon in all surgical procedures in addition to placing kidneys on cold perfusion pumps.

The fellow will take part in the selection and procurement of deceased donor abdominal organs, both brain dead donors as well as donors after cardiac death.

Attendance of weekly conferences include Grand Rounds, Adult and Pediatric Patient Selection, Patient Management, Kidney Pathology, Vascular Access Conference, Journal Club, Transplant Research and monthly Morbidity and Mortality.

Fellows are encouraged to participate in research projects and expected to attend at least one transplant related meeting annually (such as the yearly meeting of the ASTS). Time spent at scientific meetings does not count toward vacation days.
