VolunTEEN Program - Summer 2026

Program Overview

UC Davis Health Volunteer Services is excited to welcome high school students interested in healthcare and medicine. The Summer VolunTEEN Program offers a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in hospital and outpatient settings while exploring potential careers in healthcare. With placements in areas such as Patient Transportation, Radiology, ENT/Internal Medicine, Neuroscience Specialties & Epilepsy Monitoring, Patient Discharge, and more, students are sure to have a meaningful and rewarding experience.

Program Structure:

8-week program with a minimum 6-week commitment. Volunteers serve 1–2 four-hour shifts per week, based on unit discretion and overall enrollment. VolunTEEN shifts run Monday–Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (standard shifts: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be 16 years or older by June 15th, 2026.
  • Provide two (2) references (one MUST be from school teacher, counselor, coach, etc.).
  • Signed parent/guardian permission form. (click here to download permission form)
  • Commit to 6 weeks, with one 4 hour shift per week.
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English.

Health Requirements:

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Proof of two vaccinations or a positive blood titer indicating immunity.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox): Proof of two vaccinations or a positive blood titer indicating immunity.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap): Must have been administered after 2005 and include the booster for pertussis (whooping cough).
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Tests:
    • Option A: Two negative skin tests results - one within the past year, and the other in the last 3 months.  Please note: If doing both tests back-to-back, there must be a minimum of 5-day period between the first and second test, meaning - 5 days from the first test being read, and the second being placed.
    • Option B: One negative QuantiFERON (QFT) blood test within the 3 months.

Important note - If you receive a positive result form either test - you must provide proof of the positive TB test result and medical documentation of a negative chest X-ray report stating "There is no sign of TB" from your doctor.  This chest X-ray must be completed within the last 3 months.

  • Only applicants who have fully completed their volunteer application by May 4, 2026 will be considered. This includes all required waivers and trainings, medical records, two letters of recommendation, a signed permission form, and a cleared background check (for applicants 18 and over).

    Opportunities are limited. If the number of applicants exceeds available shifts, placements will be made on a first-come, first-served basis according to application completion date.

    Once accepted into the program, participants may indicate their first and second choice of placement department; however, final placement will be determined by availability and the department’s scheduling needs.
