Types of Urological Conditions

Urology is the medical specialty that deals with conditions of the male and female urinary tract and male reproductive system.

The urinary tract starts with the kidneys, which filter waste from your blood and produce urine. From the kidneys, urine passes out of your body through the ureters, bladder and urethra.

The male reproductive system produces sperm and the fluid that surrounds and protects them (semen). Parts of the male reproductive system include your testicles, prostate and the tubes that carry semen out of your penis.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are mineral deposits that form in your kidneys. Small stones may pass through your urinary tract with no pain. Larger stones can get stuck and cause severe pain and bleeding.

Male Reproductive and Urologic Cancers

Urologic and reproductive cancers can happen throughout the urinary system. These may include bladder, kidney, penile, prostate, and testicular cancers. Cancer can also affect the tubes that carry your urine.

Men’s Structural and Developmental Issues

Men can have structural urologic issues at birth or developmental conditions that cause external sex organs to appear neither male nor female.

Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder (OAB) involves urinating or feeling the urge to urinate more often than usual. OAB can also lead to urinary incontinence.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when organs in your pelvis, like your bladder, rectum, or vagina, shift downward. This can cause symptoms like aching, heaviness, or bulging in your vagina, constipation, problems urinating and incontinence.

Find out more about pelvic floor disorders
Testicular Torsion

Testicles receive blood through two long, thin tubes called spermatic cords. When you have testicular torsion, your testicles don’t stay attached well to the scrotum and twist inside, rotating the spermatic cord, stopping blood supply and causing pain.

Get information on testicular torsion
Urinary Fistulas

Urinary fistulas occur when an opening forms between the vagina and the bladder or urethra. Fistulas in this area can cause urine to leak out of your vagina.

Urinary Incontinence

Incontinence covers a range of issues. You may leak urine or have trouble making it to the bathroom in time when you feel the urge to urinate. You may also struggle to empty your bladder fully. Incontinence affects people of all ages and genders.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infections happen when bacteria get into your bladder, ureters, urethra, or kidneys. The most common type is cystitis: a bladder infection. UTIs can cause blood in your urine, fever, low back pain, and discomfort while peeing.

Learn more about UTIs
Urologic Emergencies

Some urinary conditions need urgent care, like testicular torsion or trauma to any urinary tract organ. Other emergencies include being unable to pee, Fournier’s gangrene (a life-threatening infection), prolonged erection (priapism), and swollen foreskin (paraphimosis).

Learn more about urologic emergencies
Urologic Inflammation

When any part of your urinary tract gets inflamed, it can cause pain, burning with urination and a frequent need to pee. Inflammation most commonly happens in the urethra (urethritis), the tube that carries sperm (epididymitis), and the prostate (prostatitis).

Urologic Treatments We Offer

At UC Davis Health, you’ll find advanced surgical and nonsurgical treatments for urological conditions. You are in skilled hands no matter what type of procedure you need. Our surgeons have extensive training and experience. Whenever possible, we offer minimally invasive options, which use smaller incisions that lead to faster healing.

Highlights of our surgical services include:

Botox Injections

Botox injections are an important treatment for an overactive bladder. In this condition, the muscles around your bladder contract uncontrollably, making you feel like you always have to urinate. We inject Botox into these muscles to help them relax.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Our surgeons insert a tiny camera and pencil-sized instruments through several small incisions in your abdomen. We use laparoscopic surgery, which is a type of minimally invasive surgery, to treat kidney cancer and other kidney conditions. We can also repair undescended testicles in children.

Microsurgery

Microsurgery uses a microscope and tiny instruments to perform finely detailed operations. You may receive microsurgery to close off enlarged veins in your testicle (varicocele). We also use microsurgery for sperm retrieval as part of fertility treatment.

Penile Rehabilitation

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of surgery and radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Penile rehabilitation involves a personalized mix of medications, injections and exercises to help speed recovery and improve erections.

Reconstructive Surgery

Our surgeons perform detailed procedures to repair physical abnormalities or damaged tissues. We also use reconstructive techniques to place penile implants for erectile dysfunction treatment.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is the leading edge of care for prostate removal due to cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia. This highly precise surgery helps surgeons avoid damaging the nerves around your prostate that control urination and sexual function.

Urodynamic Testing

We use urodynamic testing when you have incontinence or other urinary conditions. The test helps to assess how well your bladder is working. It involves a group of tests to assess bladder pressure, your urine stream and the filling and emptying of your bladder.

FAQs About Urology

A urologist evaluates and treats conditions affecting the urinary and reproductive systems.

Some warning signs of a bladder problem need urgent attention. Seek medical attention if your pee is red, dark brown, or frothy and bubbly. Call your doctor if you have any change in urination that lasts more than a few days.

Bladder cancer can have a high survival rate, depending on its stage, type and whether it has spread. Our team offers advanced treatment for urologic cancers. Your doctor can help you understand your diagnosis and the path ahead.

Prostate problems can include enlargement and cancer. These can cause early warning signs like trouble peeing, needing to pee urgently and often, blood in the urine, burning while urinating or ejaculating, pain when sitting and a weak urine stream.
