UC Davis researchers Paul Gumerlock and Lesley Butler have been selected as the 2004 — 2005 winners of the Christine and Helen S. Landgraf Memorial Research Award.

Gumerlock, whose research focuses on prostate cancer, is a professor of hematology and oncology. Butler is an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Her award will support her ongoing research into genetic variation in prostate cancer in African Americans. The Christine and Helen S. Landgraf Memorial Research Award was founded in 1973. It honors Christine Landgraf, who died in 1971 of Hodgkin's disease at the age of 27. In her memory, her parents, John and Helen Landgraf, longtime residents of Sacramento and Sutter Creek, donated $5,000 to help support cancer research at UC Davis.

Helen's steadfast efforts with the fund never wavered. In her memory, her name was added to the fund in 2000. She and John always supported research to advance the treatment of cancer and relieve the suffering of cancer patients and their families.

Subsequent contributions from individuals and businesses have increased the fund to more than $150,000 and have supported the work of more than 30 UC Davis researchers.
