The Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation (KTFG) fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at UC Davis is a faculty mentoring program that engages first- and second-year medical students in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP). This year-long mentoring program is designed to provide clinical exposure to child and adolescent psychiatric healthcare during a medical student's pre-clinical years. First- or second-year UC Davis medical students are paired with child and adolescent psychiatrists, meeting at least monthly for clinical experiences and mentoring.
In addition, this program is designed to increase awareness and education about child and adolescent mental health issues. During the year, the student fellow selects a topic of interest, reviews the literature, and compiles a presentation on this topic. The student fellow then presents his/her teaching module in both an academic and a community setting.
The Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation (KTGF) fellowship at UC Davis, established in 2005, is a faculty mentoring program that engages first year medical students in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP).
Each autumn, the fellowship pairs first-year medical students with practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists who serve as mentors. Fellows will meet at least monthly, work with children and learn about normal and abnormal development, and other mental health issues in children and adolescents.
A limited number of participating fellows (maximum 4) may also elect an intensive, two-to-four-week CAP summer clinical experience between their first and second year of medical school. During this "mini-clerkship", fellows will attend clinics, in-patient settings, and clinicians' offices. They will meet weekly to present cases and review current literature and will complete a summary narrative at the end of their experience.
Program leadership consists of two to four senior medical student leaders and faculty program director Robert Horst, M.D.
