How Mental Health Issues Affect Women

Mental health conditions in women can look different from those in children or men.

At UC Davis Health, we take the time to listen to your concerns and provide a customized care plan that puts your well-being first.

Common Types of Mental Health Conditions in Women:

Anxiety Disorders

Women are more than twice as likely than men to experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetimes. We provide customized treatment based on your preferences, including counseling, medications, or a combination of both.

Causes of Mental Health Conditions in Women

Mental health conditions are medical conditions. They don’t occur because of “weakness,” and you can’t just “snap out of it.” When you come to UC Davis Health for care, we explore all the possible causes of mental health conditions and use this information to guide your care.

Possible causes of mental health issues in women include:

Family History and Genetics

Some people are born with genes that make them more likely to experience mental health or substance use disorders.

Head Injury

Head injuries can increase your risk for some mental health conditions.

Long-Term Illness

Chronic medical conditions can make you more prone to mental health conditions.

Trauma or Abuse

Traumatic life experiences, such as abuse or human trafficking, can make a variety of mental health conditions more likely.
