The 6th annual Nursing Science and Professional Governance Conference was held on May 8, 2024 during Nurses Week. This event showcased the evidenced-based practice, quality improvement, research, and innovation accomplished by nurses and interdisciplinary teams at UC Davis Health. Our schedule featured a variety of presentations and activities, including, a Keynote Address, Podium Presentations, Ignite! Sessions, Poster Presentations and Workshops.

The 2024 Keynote Address was delivered by Rebecca Graystone, Ph.D., M.B.A., R.N., N.E.-C., F.A.A.N., Senior Vice President, Accreditation and Organization Credentialing at the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Her presentation is titled “A Quest for Excellence: Passion, Perseverance…Priceless." She shared her journey as a doctoral student, the findings of her study on credentialing, and the importance of setting and celebrating milestones along the way.

  • Promote the advancement of nursing science and practice.

Who should submit an abstract?


Abstract Types

UC Davis Health clinicians and nurses may submit an abstract via Qualtrics in one or more of the following categories: Research, Evidence-Based Practice, Quality Improvement or Innovation.

Research

  • Contributes to new research and scientific knowledge. Uses research study designs. Must have an IRB number or official IRB determination.
  • Structured Abstract Headings: Background, Study Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Future Research.

Evidence-Based Practice

  • Translates research into clinical practice. Uses EBP methods such as ARCC model and EBP process.
  • Structured Abstract Headings: Background, PICO Question, Critical Appraisal of the Evidence, Implementation Plan, Outcomes/Results, Conclusions and Future Work.

Quality Improvement

  • Process improvement to sustain best practices and improve efficiency. Uses QI methods such as CQI, PDSA, A3, etc.
  • Structured Abstract Headings: Background and Current State, Gap Analysis, Project Plan, Results, Conclusions and Future Work.

Innovation

  • Application of creativity, technology or problem-solving that results in an adopted strategy, product, or service that meets a need in a new and different way.
  • Structured Abstract Headings: Background, Purpose, Design and Implementation, Results, Conclusions and Next Steps

We seek topics related to all nursing roles and patient populations, clinical systems and professional practice. While nursing inquiry is highlighted in the NSPG Conference, multidisciplinary work is welcome


Abstracts on Work in Progress

  • Work must be current and ideally, completed prior to the conference.
  • For work in progress:
    • In the results/outcomes section, report the status of the work to date, any preliminary results available, outcomes you are/will be evaluating.
    • In the conclusion section, report next steps.

Presentation Formats

  • Please note if you are submitting an abstract for which you have already created a poster presentation.
  • Podium presentations must consist of original work and cannot be duplicate of work presented at a prior UC Davis Health conference.

Authorship

  • Authors may submit more than 1 abstract, however, depending on number of submissions received, only 1 presentation may be awarded per lead author.
  • Please specify in the application the following authors:
    • Submitting author (person submitting the abstract and main person of correspondence)
    • Presenting author (person anticipated to present at the conference; usually limited to 1-2 presenters)
    • Contributing authors (individuals who participated in the work, e.g., UBPC members)

  • Abstract Text – see template with structured headings based on abstract type
    • Research: Background, Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Future Research
    • Evidence-Based Practice: Background, PICO Question, Critical Appraisal of the Evidence, Implementation Plan, Outcomes, Conclusions and Future Work
    • Quality Improvement: Background and Current State, Opportunity, Action Plan, Analyses, Conclusions and Future Work
    • Innovation: Background, Purpose, Design and Implementation, Results, Conclusions and Next Steps  
  • Authors (submitting, presenting, contributing)
  • Abstracts should not exceed 500 words
  • While your background section should be based on literature, please do not include references in your abstract
  • Biographical Information & Conflict of Interest Statement for presenting author

Submission and Review Timeline

  • All submissions must be completed by January 31.
  • Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the UC Davis Health Evidence-Based Practice and Research Council in February.
  • An email to the primary submitting author will be sent in mid-March with information on abstract acceptance decision and presentation type awarded.
  • All presenters must review presentation prep materials and meet with a member of the Center for Nursing Science or EBP and Research Council ahead of their presentation.
  • All presentations will occur in person on May 8, 2024 (Wednesday during Nurses Week).

Honors and Awards: 

  1. Abstract submissions with the best score in each of the following categories will be selected to give a podium presentation in the following 'Best' categories:
    • Best People & Practice Environment
    • Best Patient Experience
    • Best Quality 
    • Best Financial Stewardship
  2. A 'People's Choice' Poster Award will be presented on the day of the conference based on attendee voting.

Conference Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: North Addition Auditorium (Room 1001) or Virtually via Zoom

Accreditation: Nursing contact hours will be awarded to UC Davis Health nurses by completing conference and presentation evaluations on the day of the event.


Costs and Attendance: 

UC Davis Health

  • There is no charge for UC Davis Health staff to attend the conference.
  • Attendees may request professional leave (PL) time to attend the conference.
  • Individual Presenters
    • Unless pre-arranged with your Manager, costs associated with conference attendance and presentation will be the responsibility of the presenter.

UBPC Presenters

  • Conference attendance and final presentation must be approved by your Manager. 

Externally-affiliated attendees

  • Costs associated with conference attendance will be the responsibility of the presenter.

Burn ICU People’s Choice Poster Winners with EBP and Research Council Members
Burn ICU People’s Choice Poster Winners with EBP and Research Council Members

Each year the “People’s Choice” for Best Poster is announced at the end of the conference after live voting through the end of the day. Everyone who attends the conference in-person and votes (UCDH staff only) and votes is entered into one of several raffles throughout the day to win a variety of generously donated prizes.

The winner of the “People’s Choice” award for the 2024 NSPG went to the Burn ICU UBPC for their poster titled: “Burn Nurses Becoming CBRN Certified”.

Nursing contact hours will be awarded to UC Davis Health nurses and previously approved external participants attending the conference in person. Please complete conference and presentation evaluations on the day of the event for those presentations attended.
