As a living kidney donor, it is important to understand that all communication with the transplant team is completely confidential. The living donor team does not share any of the donor’s medical or personal information with the recipient. This protects the donor’s privacy and ensures the program follows the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). However, donors may choose to share any information they wish with the recipient about the donation process.

If the donor evaluation process is stopped for any reason, the donor will receive a letter stating that they are not considered a suitable donor. The transplant coordinator will explain the reasons in detail to the donor. It is entirely the donor’s decision how much of this information to share with the recipient.

The UC Davis Transplant Team recognizes the significant physical and emotional commitment involved in organ donation. The team works closely with donors and recipients to make sure the experience is supportive and positive for everyone involved.
