The Advanced Psychiatric Therapeutics (APT) Clinic at UC Davis Health offers novel treatments for difficult to treat neuropsychiatric conditions, such as major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that delivers magnetic pulses to the brain. With repeated treatment, TMS can restore normal patterns of brain activity and relieve symptoms of depression even in cases where medications have not been effective.
Esketamine (brand name Spravato®) is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an antidepressant medication that is prescribed and administered as a nasal spray. It works differently than other antidepressant medications in that it affects the glutamate system in the brain, while most antidepressants affect serotonin or norepinephrine.
