The University of California, Davis, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking candidates for its inaugural GU/Renal Pathology Fellowship starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, and for the 2027-2028 year.

UC Davis offers a 1-year GU/Renal pathology fellowship which is designed to prepare the fellow as a diagnostic expert. GU responsibilities are devoted to working alone or with a resident on biopsy and resection pathology specimens, following the contemporary recommendations of the International Society of Urological Pathology and Genitourinary Pathology Society. Appropriate workup of cancer resections will be emphasized, synthesizing clinical information, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular findings. Training in this program will encompass consultation to health care staff, residents, pathologists, and clinicians including tumor boards.

Running concurrently with GU will be daily exposure to renal pathology, including special stains, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. Practice patterns will be guided according to contemporary recommendations of the Renal Pathology Society. The fellow will relay a preliminary diagnosis to nephrologists for each case.

The fellow is expected to show significant interest, and some experience, in translational and/or basic research projects. The projects pursued should lead to at least 2 paper and/or abstract publications. The fellow will also participate in departmental teaching activities for residents and medical students. At completion, the fellow will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, maturity, and communication skills to effectively function at the level of junior staff/faculty. Additional components of this fellowship may include junior attending sign-out experience at the discretion of the Fellowship Directors.

The Fellowship Directors will select among resident applicants who have preferably had four or more years of training (combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency) or an AP-only residency. Applicants should try to be licensed in California by the spring prior to their start date.
