UC Davis Health has named Thiran Jayasundera, M.D., as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science. Jayasundera is internationally recognized for his work on inherited retinal diseases and integrating mental health support with eye care. In his new role, he will oversee clinical care, education, and research initiatives aimed at improving vision health and training the next generation of ophthalmologists.
The UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology has received a five-year, $3.6 million grant from the National Eye Institute to explore a new way to treat vision loss using gene therapy. The research could lead to safer and more effective treatments for serious eye diseases like macular degeneration and inherited blindness.

Can stem cells restore vision? In this new video, Susanna Park, M.D., Ph.D., describes a clinical trial that uses gene-agnostic stem cell therapy to help patients with retinitis pigmentosa. In early results, participants reported their vision loss had stopped progressing, and some even say they saw improvement. The study was published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology journal, Ophthalmology Science.
