Gene Therapy Harnesses Viral Protein to Destroy Cancer Cells

A targeted gene therapy that kills cancer cells infected with Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus while sparing healthy tissue has been created by UC Davis researchers. The approach uses an adeno-associated virus to deliver a modified thymidine kinase enzyme, which activates ganciclovir into a cancer-killing agent in only infected cells.
