Mental health includes your emotions and thoughts and how they influence behaviors, productivity, relationships, and stress responses.
A mental health disorder, or psychiatric diagnosis, causes changes to feelings, thoughts, or behavior. This can have significant effects on your work, relationships, and ability to enjoy life.
Anxiety is a very common problem. It causes you to have feelings of fear or panic. An anxiety disorder can make it difficult for you to function in work and social settings.
ADHD can make it difficult for you to stay focused on tasks or sit still. It can also cause you to act impulsively (acting without thinking).
Depression is a medical condition that makes you feel sad for a prolonged period. You may struggle to stay productive at work or lose interest in activities you usually enjoy.
People who experience a traumatic event like abuse, violent crime, war or a natural disaster can develop PTSD. PTSD causes prolonged intense feelings about an event after it happens. It can also cause you to have flashbacks or nightmares.
Mental illness can come from a variety of biological, environmental or genetic factors.
Experiencing abuse or a traumatic event can make you more likely to develop anxiety, depression or PTSD.
Mental illnesses are often linked to changes in brain chemicals, which medications can help with.
Many mental health disorders run in families. For example, you are more likely to develop a disorder like ADHD or depression if someone in your family has one.
Prolonged stress can make you more likely to develop a variety of mental illnesses.
Alcohol and drugs can change your brain chemistry and interfere with the way your brain functions. This can lead to mental illness.
