UC Davis Children’s Hospital is the Sacramento area’s only hospital providing on-site fetal surgeries (performed on unborn babies in the womb). We are also a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and home to an Obstetric Emergency Department (OBED) for 24/7 specialized emergency care.

Our OB-GYNs work alongside maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists (newborn specialists), genetic counselors, anesthesiologists and other providers to support your personal birth plan and provide complete care under one roof.

Prenatal testing and screening are preventive services for you and your baby. Regular tests, such as ultrasounds and bloodwork, can help us identify and treat problems before they cause pregnancy complications. Prenatal care also includes pregnancy health and nutrition. We help you choose the right foods, vitamins, and supplements for your needs.

No two pregnancies are alike, and your birth plan will be as unique as you are. Our birth planning services help you understand your options for childbirth. We offer different kinds of pain management, support for natural childbirth, gentle C-sections and more. As the Sacramento area’s academic medical center, our breadth and depth of expertise can provide additional flexibility around birth planning goals, unique health histories and cultural requests.

Whether you have a special procedure like a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) or an unexpected complication, we are available 24/7. We provide the medical and emotional care you and your baby need after childbirth. From personalized breastfeeding support to enhanced recovery after delivery, we want you to feel comfortable taking your new arrival home.

A high-risk pregnancy can be the result of age, health conditions, multiple births or other causes. If you have a complicated pregnancy, you receive seamlessly coordinated care from a multispecialty team, all under one roof. 

Some fetal conditions require us to do tests or procedures on an unborn baby still developing in the womb. Ours is the only comprehensive program in the region offering on-site fetal surgeries. Our uncommon expertise in this specialty gives your baby a better chance for a successful outcome.

Our children’s hospital offers a level 4 NICU. Level 4 NICUs deliver the highest level of care, reserved for the most critically ill newborns. Our NICU features specialized equipment for ventilation, stabilization and life support, in addition to a special small‑baby unit with a dedicated team for extremely preterm infants (including those born at 22-23 weeks). Your baby receives 24/7 care from a skilled team.

A miscarriage or other type of pregnancy loss can be devastating. We offer the medical expertise and emotional support you need to heal and reduce your risk of future complications.

Our OBED provides round-the-clock and specialized emergency care to pregnant women and their babies who have life-threatening or urgent needs. We offer 24/7 access to highly trained obstetric experts, evaluation or pregnancy-related concerns and care for normal and high-risk pregnancies.

We encourage women to attempt a vaginal delivery after cesarean section (VBAC). We routinely handle VBAC deliveries and provide a safe environment that includes an in-depth review of your benefits and risks. Our specially trained nurses help you with positioning and labor. You receive enhanced monitoring during labor, and our anesthesiologists are on site 24/7 for pain control. If needed, we can quickly pivot to a C-section delivery.
