Didactic Program

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers a well rounded educational program during residents' training.

Mondays
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • CA2 & CA3:  Center for Virtual Care simulation center.  Lectures with discussions, and board review sessions

Tuesdays
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • CA1:  Core curriculum and simulation training at Center for Virtual Care.

6:10 a.m. – 6:45 a.m.

  • Pediatric anesthesia section seminars

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Mondays

4th Monday: CA-3 mock oral exams

Tuesdays
6:45 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.

  • Departmental Grand Rounds, mobidity and mortality conference

First Wednesday of each Month
5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

  • Cardiac anesthesia clinical conference

Second Wednesday of each Month

  • Pediatric section seminar research meeting or journal club

Fourth Thursday of each Month
5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Curriculum

CA-1 Curriculum

  • Mastery of the basics of clinical anesthesia
  • Weekly Monday didactic sessions
  • Anesthesia knowledge test
  • Annual in-training examination
  • Clinical assignment to general anesthesia cases
  • Quarterly meeting with mentor

CA-2 Curriculum

  • Mastery of subspecialties of anesthesia: four-week rotations in cardiac anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, pain management, regional anesthesia, ambulatory anesthesia, post-care anesthesia, and transplant anesthesia
  • Two four-week critical care medicine rotations
  • Anesthesia knowledge test
  • Annual in-training examination
  • Clinical assignment to cases on subspecialty rotations, call on subspecialty rotations
  • Biannual meeting with mentor
  • Weekly Monday didactic sessions

CA-3 Curriculum

  • Weekly Monday didactic sessions, monthly mock oral session
  • Demonstrated mastery of general and subspecialty anesthesia
  • Demonstrated mastery of general and subspecialty anesthesia clinical and techniques
  • Demonstrated mastery of application of theoretical materials in the clinical setting
  • Rotation to Shriners Children Hospital
  • Four-week cardiac anesthesia rotation
  • Four-week pediatric anesthesia rotation
  • Anesthesia knowledge test
  • Annual in-training examination
  • Clinical assignment to advanced and complex cases, specialty and general call
  • Biannual meeting with mentor
  • Senior project
