Critical Care Anesthesiology
As specialists in critical care medicine, we provide care for individuals with complex, high-acuity, and life-threatening illnesses. We focus on the treatment of perioperative patients through all phases of their surgical journey including their preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods.
We manage the most demanding and delicate anesthetics to support our patients through a wide variety of surgical procedures. Post-operatively, our goals are to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to our patients and their families throughout their critical illness. Our service has cultivated extensive expertise in resuscitation and emergency stabilization, rapid diagnosis, management of complex physiology, pain and sedation management, airway placement, vascular access, and many other areas. In addition to critical care medicine, we are active members of multidisciplinary teams involved in complex patient care coordination for trauma anesthesia, liver transplant anesthesia, neuro anesthesia, burn anesthesia, and high-risk obstetric anesthesia. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Our team of highly skilled critical care anesthesiologists are all board certified or board eligible in critical care medicine. Within our group, we also have additional certifications and skills in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), Basic perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Our section is committed to continuous education, training, skill preservation and advancements in the field to ensure we remain at the forefront of critical care anesthesia. Our teaching efforts and interests focus on POCUS education, resuscitation and perioperative transfusion management, complex anatomical and physiologic airway management, pain management, liver transplant anesthesiology, and complex cardiopulmonary physiology.
We are major contributors to multiple committees including the hospital-wide intensive care unit committee, departmental and hospital quality and safety committees, code blue committees, clinical practice advisory committees, and technology and equipment committees. We are also deeply engaged in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.
We work collaboratively with other intensivists within the UC Davis Health Medical Center with backgrounds in pulmonary critical care, emergency medicine, surgical critical care, burn critical care, neurocritical care and pediatric critical care to provide optimal and balanced care for everyone.
