Taking care of yourself after kidney donation is important. This section explains what to expect after donation and how your care will continue.

The donor team will contact you at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after donation. These typically include a phone check-in and lab tests to monitor your kidney. The team will also send a letter to your primary care provider asking them to check your kidney labs once a year.

Stay hydrated
Aim for at least 64 ounces of water a day.

Eat a balanced diet
Choose a variety of healthy foods, including vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruits, and nuts. Try to prepare most meals at home and limit processed foods.

Stay active
Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. Activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, dancing, rowing, or using an elliptical machine are all good options. Adding strength training exercises at least 2 days per week will give you added benefits.

Maintain a healthy weight
Focus on maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle rather than specific weight goals. Try to avoid large or rapid changes in weight.

See your doctor yearly
See your primary care provider once a year for a physical exam, routine labs, vaccines, and cancer screenings.
