Combinatorial
chemistry is focus of $1 million grant

S. Lam, chief of the division of hematology/oncology for the UC
Davis Cancer Center, has received a grant of almost $1 million to
use combinatorial chemistry to identify novel synthetic compounds
that bind to the surfaces of cancer cells.
Using
Lam's patented one bead, one compound approach, millions of compounds
such as peptides can be created and screened for their ability to
bind to the surface of intact tumor cells.
Lam
will use a peptide microarray technology to analyze how well these
compounds bind to a patient's cancer cells and to determine what
biochemical affect they have on cells. Ultimately, these compounds
can be used as targeting agents for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The
three-year grant is funded by the NCI.
