Finding
better ways to treat kidney cancer
(continued)
Radical
laparoscopic nephrectomy is best suited for patients with early
to midstage kidney cancer that has not spread. But the advantages
to the patient are comparable to those for other minimally invasive
surgeries: less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
"We
can reduce morbidities and complications from surgery without compromising
cancer treatment,"' says Das.
After
his surgery, Brassesco was home in three days. "I had no pain,
and I was able to do everything I wanted, although I had to be careful,"
he says. "Within a few weeks I was completely back to my regular
routine."
With
a bit of luck, he'll be at this routine for awhile.
