Cancer
center gala raises awareness, money
UC
Davis Cancer Center's first-ever special event "Passport to
Morocco" grossed about $170,000 for cancer research and children's
philanthropies. Some 500 people attended the Nov. 6 soiree, which
took place at the Sacramento Convention Center.
Invitees
enjoyed an evening of fine dining, dancing, and Monte Carlo-style
gambling in a hall decorated with lighted archways and Moroccan-style
landscaping. A VIP reception and dinner were followed by a live
auction offering a real trip to Morocco and a day in a cancer research
laboratory, among other items. Exotic belly dancers, tarot card
readers, appetizers and lively music made for a memorable evening.
The
highlight of the event was the creation of a new endowment for breast
and prostate cancer. This special endowment was sold as an item
during the live auction. Some 70 guests pledged to support the endowment,
which raised $18,000.
Because
endowments use only the interest income and the principal of the
invested funds, they exist in perpetuity. Endowments are earning
approximately 14 percent over a 10-year term as invested with the
Regents of the University of California.
The
event was chaired by Suzanne Demas of the UC Davis Cancer Center
Regional Development Leaders and Liz Davis and Kim Saca of the Active
20-30 Club #1032 in Sacramento. A portion of the evening proceeds
will benefit children's charities chosen by Sacramento Active 20-30
Club.
