- Moving after more than 27 years from its former location on V Street to its new location on 45th Street between V and X Streets
- New name: Michael W. Chapman Emergency and Trauma Center at UC Davis Medical Center
- Cost of move: Approximately $32 million, not including equipment
- Serves a 33-county, 65,000 square-mile area north to the Oregon border and east to Nevada and beyond
- More than double the size:
- Over 40,000 square feet, up from approximately 19,000 square feet in former emergency department
- Sixty-two percent more beds: 68 beds, up from 42 beds
- Pediatric beds: 11 beds, up from seven
- Approximately 55,000 patients treated each year in emergency department, one of the busiest in Northern California
- Only level I trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons for both adults and children in inland Northern California
- Trauma stations: Three trauma stations
- Four emergency department treatment “pods,” three adult pods and one pediatric pod
- Fast-track area for less acutely ill patients
- Paperless emergency department: Wired for mobile medical devices, allowing patient information to be gathered, entered and recorded into electronic medical record system at bedside — new ED is paperless
- Nearly 100 faculty and staff involved in planning and implementing the move over a three-year period
- Staff:
- 29 emergency department physicians board-certified in emergency medicine, 40 residents, three fellows and eight clinical faculty
- 5 pediatric emergency department physicians sub-board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine
- 8 surgeons board-certified in surgery and in surgical critical-care medicine
- Required changing more than 1,250 internal signs, numerous external signs
