How to Get Help
Office Hours
In order to efficiently and effectively meet the statistical needs of clinical and translational investigators at UC Davis, the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) - in collaboration with the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center - maintain "office hours" for statistical consultations. These office hours are an opportunity for investigators to consult with a statistician about the design, analysis or presentation of medical research studies in a friendly, informal setting.
Every Tuesday, 12 – 2 p.m. via WebEx
Statisticians: Machelle Wilson, Ph.D., and Hong Li, Ph.D.
First and third Mondays, 1 - 2 p.m. via Zoom
Statisticians: LiHong Qi, Ph.D., and Sandra Taylor, Ph.D.
Due to the popularity of these programs, investigators interested in attending an office hours event are asked to reserve a spot in advance. Limit of 1 spot per week per project for up to 2 projects.

Request One-on-One Support
Investigators can request more in-depth biostatistics assistance and one of our statisticians will be assigned to work with you individually. For assistance with grant proposals or data analysis projects, please contact us sufficiently in advance of the needed results to make completion possible. The needed lead time may be as much as one to three months or more depending on the complexity of the project and personnel availability.
To request support, please submit a request for services through this link: https://redcap.link/dx2xfjrv
For general information or inquiries about services or how to engage with a statistician on your project, please email Sandra Taylor at sltaylor@ucdavis.edu or Jeff Fine at jrfine@ucdavs.edu.
Cost of Services and Budgeting
Office Hours
Biostatistics office hours support is provided free of charge.
Grant Proposal Preparation
Biostatistics support for preparing grant proposals is provided free of charge. However, funding to provide an adequate level of statistical support for the project should be included in the proposed budget. Guidance on the appropriate level of effort is provided in our Guidelines for Estimating Biostatistician Effort and Resources on Grants (PDF).
Projects Without Extramural Funding
For projects without external funding, unfunded biostatistics support is limited to 10 hours for faculty and staff and 2 hours for medical residents and students. Beyond 10 hours, our standard recharge rate of $89/hour applies.
Within the 10-hour limit, we can advise on appropriate statistical methods for data analysis, assist with interpreting the results, review draft manuscripts, assist with responding to reviewer comments, and consult on general statistical questions. Usually, this level of effort is not sufficient for us to conduct statistical analyses except for simple, straightforward projects. A clean, well-structured, and documented data set is required for us to conduct the analyses.
Projects With Extramural Funding
All projects supported by extramural funding must provide cost recovery for professional statistical services at a level commensurate with the available funding and level of effort. Guidance on the appropriate level of effort is provided in our Guidelines for Estimating Biostatistician Effort and Resources on Grants (PDF).
