The Greater Sacramento Area Experiential Program was established in 1985 as the UC Davis-Sacramento program and has expanded greatly over the years. The program currently accepts 20-23 third-year pharmacy students from the UC San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy. The program director is located at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento where most of the acute care Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) are located. As with the other off-campus experiential programs at UCSF, students complete all requirements for graduation locally. Over 100 practitioner-faculty located throughout the Sacramento metropolitan area serve as preceptors, role models, and mentors for students assigned to the program. Faculty are employed in both teaching and community sites, providing students with an opportunity to evaluate career opportunities in a variety of traditional and non-traditional practice settings. Students also participate in various research projects and have received recognition and awards for their efforts.
The primary sites for required and many elective APPEs are UC Davis Health, Sutter Health, California Poison Control System – Sacramento, VA Northern California Health Care (Mather and McClellan), Dignity Health, and Kaiser Permanente (Roseville and South Sacramento). As the program has grown, so has the variety of APPEs at these primary sites with a robust offering of both acute and ambulatory care experiences. Other elective APPEs are also available at unique practices such as the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, managed care organizations, specialty pharmacies, and home infusion pharmacies.
Graduating students consistently rate the Greater Sacramento program highly for its rich learning environment, exposure to diverse patient populations, professional and nurturing faculty, rotation assignment flexibility, and networking opportunities.
Additionally, students from University of the Pacific (UOP) and California Northstate University (CNU) Schools of Pharmacy may request to complete their APPEs at the UC Davis Medical Center.
Hi, my name is Alexander Chang, and I am a New Jersey native who graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in Molecular Biology. I am excited to be in the Sacramento area and have been loving it so far. My goals this year are to challenge myself to improve every day, learn how to be uncomfortable, and share what I learn with my friends and colleagues as we all grow together. After work, you can find me lifting weights in the gym (cardio couple times a week), experimenting with new food recipes, and exploring the food scene around Sac (recommendations welcome). I look forward to working with you.
