Trang Khuu | AIM Services

Reason for Recognition: Trang has gone above and beyond to advocate for me but more importantly, to encourage me to advocate for myself. I first met Trang at my first appointment at AIMS, about 6 years ago. I was very nervous to be in a new environment, trusting new people to care for me. I got very nauseous when my port was accessed for the first time in about a year. Trang brought me alcohol prep wipes and taught me to smell them to relieve nausea. I still keep some in my purse, six years later and have taught many people that trick since. Trang and I talk about books at any appointment where she is my nurse. After sharing details of my family life, she always remembers and checks in on how each of my family members is doing with their current struggle. The thing that stands out to me the most in Trang’s nursing, outside of her warm demeanor and fun personality, is that even though she’s treated me many times, she ALWAYS ask ?may I touch your port? before she touches me. Many nurses just start treating me or say “I’m going to start cleaning your port area/feel your port” but Trang ALWAYS asks! As a frequent medical patient, being given respect, autonomy, and the active choice of consent empowers me. Trang has made me feel like I am not only safe at AIMS but that I am among friends, but it’s not just that kindness that makes her a great nurse. What makes her a great nurse is that she remembers how my port tilts, takes her time before accessing me/never rushes, and has never once missed on a poke, because of her attention to detail. She’s a great person, but she’s also a great nurse!
