Augustina Misin

Augustina Misin
East 8 MED/Surg Specialty Unit

Nominator: Dohi and Adelohosgi Agatahnai

My husband and I are very pleased with the care he received at the hospital. Augustina was the ONE nurse that was there the most often (once moved to east 8th) and we are grateful!

Augustina has a great attitude and even though she is pregnant, she didn't make excuses, she still gave excellent care. For example, we know the nurse to patient ratio is 1:4. Some nurses don't handle that well, but with Augustina she always had a compassionate and caring attitude. She didn't make him feel bad because he was urinating a lot and got the sheets wet on many occasions.

Additionally, once she found out that he was able to walk, she made sure that PT came by to get him out of bed and if they didn't come, she assured me that SHE would make sure he got out of bed so he wouldn't be deconditioned!

Why does this matter? Well, I told her that he had been hospitalized from Feb 26th to May 6th for disseminated cocci infection, and from there he was transferred to an acute rehab center. He was discharged from there on May 15th. He had to learn how to walk again, shower himself etc. He worked hard to get to a place where he could be independent and now, he had to be hospitalized AGAIN on Jun 13th due to high calcium levels. So my BIGGEST CONCERN was that he would lose all that progress if he was allowed to stay in bed. I assured her that he could walk. Upon hearing this information, she MADE SURE that she got him out of bed!

I'm so grateful, because my husband was able to retain the strength that he already had, WHILE he was being treated for hypercalcemia. She also made sure he was able to get in the shower.

This may not seem like a big deal from the outset, BUT it is to us because, from previous experience, many nurses don't want "to be bothered" with things like this because it's too much work.

My husband's spirits were lifted to be able to feel clean. He was in the hospital for two weeks.

We live 80 miles away from UC Davis, so I could not come to see him every day.

It was a relief to know that Augustina was there on duty because I knew my husband would be getting compassionate and conscientious care. I could message Augustina through the online app or call with any questions and I never felt rushed or made to feel bad for asking too many questions. She was very responsive.

My husband would tell me that he liked it when Augustina was there, for all of the above reasons and when the patient is happy, it helps with recovery.

My husband came home in very good condition and is doing well.

I credit his care team, and Augustina was an important and vital part as the front line care member that he relied on daily.

Thank you, Augustina!

She's a real gem, and she makes UC DAVIS look good!
