Position Description

Laboratory Research (90%):
The candidate will be responsible for research in infectious diseases, immunology and microbiome. Successful candidates will participate in performing molecular techniques such as RNA/DNA extraction, large-scale sample repository and maintenance, Real Time PCR Assays and gene expression Analysis. General responsibilities include: perform histology and immunochemistry, assist in tissue processing, participate in animal studies, processing of human patient samples, use tissue culture models to perform experiments using molecular biology, immunochemistry and imaging, transcriptional analysis, and cell cultures. This position will be expected to assist in the preparation of BUA and animal use protocols, maintain lab safety protocols, manage specimen inventory, data input/storage, and maintaining an inventory of supplies and placing requests for orders to the business office. The candidate will record, analyze, and compile data as well as complete data uploads to appropriate Laboratory Information Systems. They will be expected to aid in troubleshooting and analysis of findings and work closely with research team members. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Professional Competence (5%):
The candidate will be expected to attend lab meetings and when appropriate, will present data to their laboratory peers and will contribute to scholarly articles by providing their research findings, data, and write-ups on the work performed and may participate in writing manuscript portions in relation to their research findings. The candidate will review scholarly literature to improve or learn about methods for the project that are needed for ongoing projects and will participate in local conferences and joint lab meetings.

Service (5%):
The candidate will also provide University/public service by providing mentorship of undergraduate students, guiding them in laboratory safety and training in work and data analysis.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or a related field with prior laboratory experience. Must exhibit professional approach to work and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Coursework and/or experience to perform molecular biology techniques. Experience in developing or adapting experimental tools and assays. Experience with large-scale sample repository and maintenance. Computer skills and experience for scientific data entry and usage is also preferred.

Position Description

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (Regular/In Residence Series) in Microbiome Sciences, including the role of microbiome in human health and disease, microbial metabolism, microbiome ecology, interaction of mucosal pathogens with host-associated microbial communities, metagenomics, antimicrobial resistance, microbiome changes and implications in viral, bacterial, parasitic, fungal infections and cancer. The earliest anticipated start date is June 2, 2025.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a funded research program in microbiome sciences. In addition, the candidate is expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial and collaborative team atmosphere, and strong commitment to contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion. This research recruitment would also promote and develop team science projects with investigators in UC Davis Health as well as other colleges at UC Davis. This research recruitment will bolster the intellectual and technical capacity of the microbiome core infrastructure and will serve as the platform for generating new ideas and technologies to advance research in microbiome and human health.

The MMI Department faculty are engaged in research investigations on human infectious diseases, host immune interactions with pathogens and commensal microbiota, immune responses in malignancies, vaccine development and immune therapeutics for cancer and infectious diseases, epigenetic regulation and genetic therapies of autism spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders. Laboratory and office space is available (including BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory space), with state-of-the art facilities, instrumentation, and administrative support. The NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center supports clinical, translational, and basic research in cancer. The MMI research and teaching programs intersect with other campus-wide programs and resources in the School of Medicine, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, Genome Center, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, MIND Institute, Stem Cell Program and California National Primate Research Center.

Qualifications

  • For applicants at the Assistant Professor level, a strong record of research publications and potential for obtaining extramural funding is required.
  • The successful candidate must have a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with postdoctoral experience and a record of excellent research publications.
  • Experience in basic, translational and/or collaborative research in areas that integrate well with the research strengths in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and related programs at the University of California, Davis is required.
