Gaurav Gulati serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Ambulatory Medical Specialties at UC Davis Health.
In this role, Gulati oversees the clinical operations for more than 20 service line ambulatory medical specialties across UC Davis Health, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care and the implementation of innovative medical practices. Prior to this position, he was the senior medical director for medical specialties at UC Davis Health.
A visionary and collaborative leader, Gulati holds multiple concurrent roles that reflect his commitment to academic excellence and clinical innovation. He is the Instructor of Record (IOR) for a novel, innovative Business of Medicine elective course offered to advanced-year medical students.
He is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology at the UC Davis School of Medicine, and also serves as clinic medical director and divisional chair for Continuous Quality Improvement. Gulati directs both the Lupus Clinical Care Program and the division’s Clinical Trials Program, promoting translational research and evidence-based practices. He is also the pharmacy professional director at UC Davis Health.
Gulati brings a multidisciplinary perspective to leadership, shaped by a global medical education that began at the University of Delhi and continued through a residency and chief residency at Reading Hospital and Medical Center, which was followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Cincinnati. He holds active dual board certifications in Internal Medicine (ABIM) and Rheumatology (ABMS) and is a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. In addition, he earned an MBA with a focus on health care administration and finance, and a Master’s of Science in Clinical and Translational Research.
Gulati’s research focuses on the pathophysiology of systemic lupus erythematosus, with a special interest in the role of environmental factors in the onset and progression of the disease, as well as the identification of early markers of disease activity and progression. He has authored and co-authored multiple PubMed-cited manuscripts on this topic and has presented his work at numerous national meetings, including the American College of Rheumatology’s annual conferences.
Gulati’s goal is to provide “patient-centric,” evidence based, high-quality health care that improves outcomes and enhances the patient experience through a coordinated approach. He believes in treating an “individual,” not merely a disease condition, and he deeply appreciates patients’ goals of care and preferences developed through collective decision-making. In his administrative role, he is a strong advocate for patient-centered care firmly grounded in the patient experience and clinical outcomes.
