Dr. Yoon's clinical interest is diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Yoon is interested in molecular studies of metabolic regulation and human disease. Ongoing work utilizes a combination of experimental systems and approaches to investigate the roles of several molecules that his laboratory has identified as controlling energy balance in cells and organisms.
A sustained positive energy balance from excessive dietary intake and/or reduced energy expenditure results in obesity, predisposing to diabetes and other serious medical conditions. While most available anti-obesity drugs work by suppressing appetite, increasing energy expenditure via thermogenesis is an alternative and promising approach to improving energy balance. Conversely, certain human conditions such as cachexia or cystic fibrosis are characterized by a negative energy balance from inadequate nutrition and/or increased energy expenditure, lowering survival and compromising quality of life. A long-term goal of Dr. Yoon’s research program is to develop new therapeutic agents for human disorders associated with abnormally regulated energy balance. A related area of interest is the contribution of mitochondrial defects and inflammatory processes to the development of metabolic disease.
