Dr. Haczku is an internationally recognized expert in pulmonary immunology. She studies the effects of environmental exposures (allergens, air pollution, cigarette smoke and psychosocial stress) on respiratory health and disease. She is interested in how the epithelium and local immune cells cooperate in maintaining a healthy lung tissue. More recently her team has been focusing on COVID-19 immunity and the effects of climate change on respiratory health. She has been federally funded for the past 20 years and has received numerous awards, such as the Parker B Francis Pulmonary Fellowship, the MRC (Canada) Fellowship Award and the American Lung Association (ALA) Career Investigator Award. At UC Davis, she holds the Chester Robbins Endowment for Pulmonary Research. Dr. Haczku is a Fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI), and is an inducted member of the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum. She has served on expert panels of the American Lung Association, American Thoracic Society (ATS), National Institutes of Health, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Defense and numerous European and global agencies. She is the elected Chair of the AAAAI Mechanisms of Allergy and Immunology Interest Section and was the elected Chair of the ATS Allergy, Inflammation and Immunology Program Committee. She has been associate editor of Respiratory Research; Allergy; The International Archives of Allergy and Immunology; and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, and the American Journal of Physiology, among others. She trained numerous undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral and clinical fellows who remain in research positions all over the world; several became full professors, directing their own research programs.
Dr. Haczku is a respiratory immunologist with a research focus on the pathogenesis of allergy, asthma, COPD and pulmonary infections. She is interested in studying the effects of environmental exposures such as air pollution, cigarette smoking and psychosocial stress on airway inflammation. She has developed in vivo (animal) and in vitro models to investigate disease mechanisms and treatment. Dr. Haczku currently serves as associate dean for translational research for the UC Davis School of Medicine.
