Rosenblatt returns to the health system where his academic and clinical career began.

“It’s amazing to be back,” Rosenblatt said. “When I came here, it was my very first job, and my time here was formative. I was a junior faculty member. I had my laboratory, I had my clinical practice, and the mentorship was so important in moving my career forward.”

Rosenblatt brings a distinguished record as a clinician-scientist and academic health leader. Most recently, he served as executive dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He also held senior leadership roles there, including serving as CEO of the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics and as a Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. His career spans medical education, health system leadership and translational research, with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications.

Reflecting on what drew him back to UC Davis Health, Rosenblatt cited the culture and people.

“The people are the secret sauce,” he said. “It’s the thing that makes UC Davis Health so special, and coming back and having the chance to work with so many talented, dedicated individuals – it is wonderful.”

He emphasized UC Davis Health’s unique role in serving patients, advancing discovery and improving health across Northern California and beyond.

“I know how much UC Davis and UC Davis Health mean to Californians,” Rosenblatt said. “It is such an important fixture, being the only academic medical center in this part of California. It is a huge responsibility, but also, of course, a huge privilege.”

Rosenblatt also underscored the global impact of the institution’s work.

“The discoveries that happen here at UC Davis Health are more than just helpful for Californians,” he said. “These are things that change the world. And so, a chance to be part, again, of such a health system, and a chance to lead it and work with other talented leaders – to make these important things happen. It is amazing to be able to come back and realize we can have such an important impact.”

Rosenblatt will begin his new role Jan. 19, 2026.
