Course description
This hands-on simulated experience is intended for providers who must be sedation certified. The curriculum focuses on training supervised sedation professionals (SSPs) who work in critical care, procedural settings, and clinical areas that perform procedural sedation. This course has pre-course requirements that consist of two online modules and post-tests. Modules must be completed no more than 30 days prior to class and the certificate of completion or training transcript must be shown at registration to attend the in-person skills validation session.
The in-person skills validation session consists of simulated case studies through use of a Human Patient Simulator (HPS). The focus is on the nurse’s role in providing safe, high-quality care for adult and/or pediatric patients at all phases along the sedation continuum. Effective team behaviors and communication skills will be incorporated throughout the curriculum, and participants will have an opportunity to practice management of a sedated patient during the simulation portion of the course. This course emulates the nurse’s workflow, stressing the importance of appropriate assessment, monitoring, early identification of complications and timely interventions, when caring for patients undergoing sedation. Participants who complete this course will receive validation of the sedation skills checklist.
This is a blended learning course that consists of two parts. Part 1 consists of two self-paced online modules that will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. These modules are listed under prerequisites and preparation. Part 2 consists of an in-person skills validation. The in-person portion of this course is 2.5 hours in length. Part 1 and Part 2 of this course will take a total of 5 hours to complete.
