Position Description
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine, is recruiting for a part-time (50%) Professional Researcher at the Assistant, Associate, Full rank in the field of developmental and translational cancer therapeutics.
The Professional Researcher develops and oversees their own independent, creative and high-quality research program, equivalent to that required for the Professor series. The Professional Researcher takes major responsibility and leadership for their program(s). Generally, the appointee is expected to secure funding as a Principal Investigator but may be funded as a co-PI within a large center or collaborative program grant on which many independent investigators are working, as long as it is clear that the activities led by the professional researcher within the larger project constitute their own independent research program. Appointees do not have teaching responsibilities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. RESEARCH (90% Effort)
The candidate is required to develop an independent research program on developmental and translational cancer therapeutics. The candidate will be expected to develop and translate novel therapeutics for cancers such as nanomedicine or small molecular inhibitors:
- Devise and conduct studies designed for translational cancer research
- Collect, summarize and analyze data
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals as senior author
- Prepare reports on research findings
- Acquire funding to support an independent research program.
Other research duties may include:
- Manage the budget and the project according to sound management principles
- Mentor employees paid on the budget
- Write and submit progress reports to funding agencies
- Train, consult with, and advise graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with regard to experimental design and data analysis of studies conducted in their area of expertise.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% Effort)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give research presentations at national and international scientific meetings. When appropriate, the candidate may be requested to coordinate seminars and laboratory meetings.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% Effort)
University and Public Service is required for the Associate and Full ranks. The candidate will engage in University service activities, such as guest lecturing and committee service. The candidate will also engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals or public agencies. The candidate may also be requested to coordinate seminars and laboratory meetings.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)
- D,V,M and Ph.D. or equivalent degree in cancer biology or nanomedicine
- The successful candidate will have strong interest in translational cancer research
- At least three years of productive postdoctoral fellowship or equivalent experience
- An outstanding record or leadership or potential for outstanding record of leadership in research and creative activity of high quality and significance, independence, and productivity
- Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain extramurally funded research programs
- Evidence of academic accomplishment, such as refereed journal papers and conference presentations
- Specific qualifications for this role include experience in animal studies, toxicology, GMP nanoparticle large-scale production, and design of IND enabling studies
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)
- Experience with IND filing
- Experience in FDA regulation rules
- Experience in drug formulation
- Board-certified veterinary clinical pathology (DACVP)

Position Description
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting for a part-time (50%) Project Scientist at the Assistant/Associate rank in medicinal chemistry and drug development.
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency in new drug research and development. Appointees with Project Scientist series may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, etc.), they are not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. The Project Scientist will conduct research or creative programs under the supervision of an individual with an academic title with automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Professor Yuanpei Li and the ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. RESEARCH (95% Effort)
Research Activity (80%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of new anticancer drug development. Topics include designing and synthesizing small molecule drugs and nanomedicines, tracking, optimizing data acquisition and processing, data handling and analysis, and consulting with physician scientists on new drug clinical trials.
The appointee will help determine research goals in consultation with the principal investigators. The Project Scientist will design specific projects, including selecting appropriate methods and techniques. In some cases, the appointee may supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, troubleshooting problems, interpreting results, and planning follow-up experiments. The appointee collaborates with scientific colleagues in multi-disciplinary projects that include components within the appointee’s area of expertise.
Publication (10%)
The appointee will publish research in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other research team members.
Grant Acquisition (5%)
The appointee will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The appointee will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies, and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% Effort)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific fields of medicinal chemistry and applications and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. The candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions when appropriate.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (0% Effort)
The appointee may undertake administrative tasks relevant to the smooth running of the laboratory enterprise as appropriate.

Qualifications

- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry
- At least 9 years of experience in new drug research and development post terminal degree
- Research experience in medicinal chemistry
- Evidence of academic accomplishment such as refereed journal papers and conference presentations
- Specific qualifications for this role include the ability to design, synthesize, and evaluate drugs in vitro and in vivo for small and nanometer drug molecules.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)
- Experience with using computer-aided design of small molecule drugs
- Experience of design of nanomedicines and evaluation of nanoparticle properties
- Proficient with NMR, MASS, HPLC
- At least 9 years of working in medicinal chemistry
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
