Catherine Chia, M.D., Associate Chief Medical Officer for Operational Efficiency

Catherine (Catie) Chia, M.D., serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Operational Efficiency at UC Davis Health.

In this role, Chia oversees the development and implementation of key strategies that enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of clinical operations across UC Davis Health. Chia provides direction to a network of physician leaders representing patient care programs and hospital services including the Physician Advisor Program, Utilization Management, Transfer Center, Hospital Care Management and Transitions of Care. 

An associate clinical professor specializing in hospital medicine, Chia has built a distinguished career in the medical field that is marked by her dedication to patient care, education, and quality improvement. She has led hospital capacity management and patient flow process improvement work through multidisciplinary committees, promoting collaboration between departments and across disciplines, improving patient flow and regional access to care, while meeting institutional and service line clinical strategic goals.

She completed her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in 2010. Following medical school, Chia fulfilled her internship and residency in internal medicine at UC Davis Medical Center. She is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and joined the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine in 2013. Her clinical interests include hospital medicine, where she focuses on the comprehensive care of hospitalized patients, ensuring they receive the best possible treatment during their stay.

In addition to her clinical work, Chia is actively involved in medical education, teaching and mentoring. She was recognized with a Chief of Staff Award, Diamond Doc Award, and as one of Sacramento Magazine’s “Top Doctors,” among others. Known for her compassionate and patient-centered approach to medicine, Chia strives to improve the health care system through her work in clinical practice, education, and quality improvement.
