Mohamed R. Ali, M.D., Senior Associate Chief Medical Officer

Mohamed R. Ali, M.D., is the Senior Associate Chief Medical Officer at UC Davis Health.

In this role, Ali contributes to the medical leadership and strategic direction of UC Davis Health through the oversight of clinical operations and the enhancement of patient care quality and safety. He is a professor and chief of Foregut, Metabolic, and General Surgery, the executive director of the Center for Alimentary and Metabolic Science, the medical director of Bariatric Surgery, and the medical director of Outpatient Surgery Clinics.

Ali specializes in the application of minimally invasive surgical techniques to conventional surgery, surgery of the foregut including reflux and achalasia, and laparoscopic bariatric surgery. This includes the use of advanced technology such as surgical robotics in the treatment of surgical disease. Widely published in his field, Ali’s research examines the long-term outcomes and co-morbidity reduction in bariatric surgeries, the application of technology and robotics to laparoscopy, and the genetic and hormonal bases for obesity.

Ali completed his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine, his general surgery residency at the same institution, and a minimally invasive and bariatric surgery fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University. His first position at UC Davis Health came in 2002 when he was appointed as an assistant professor of surgery.

Ali believes that trust is the basis of a successful therapeutic relationship between a patient and a doctor. He seeks to develop mutual trust with his patients through transparency, respect, and compassion.
