Financial Hardship in Oncology Care: Impact and Factors for Social Workers | Center for Professional Practice of Nursing | UC Davis Health

Cancer treatment is expensive, not only the cost of treatment, but the loss of income due to disability, insurance copays, and logical costs of getting to and from treatment. For many reasons, some patients and their families face significant cancer-related financial hardship (also known as financial toxicity). This eLearning module includes recorded video narration and slides designed for licensed clinical social workers, registered nurses, and allied health professionals. This course will examine cancer-related financial hardship, how to talk to patients and families about financial concerns, and how we can get help for our cancer patients and families.

Continuing Education

CE Credit

UC Davis Heath - Center for Professional Practice of Nursing, provider #1866, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 5/20/2025 – 5/20/2028. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 total continuing education credits.

CE Certificate

The CE certificate will be issued upon course completion. The CE certificate will be available for download in UC Learning Center for UC Davis Health employees.

Attendees must complete entire course; no partial credit can be awarded.

For a distance learning course, the participant must complete the entire course, a course evaluation, and a post-test if the course is non-interactive. The evaluation and post-test, if used, is provided and submitted electronically during the course.

Instructor Bios

• Angela E. Usher, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., O.S.W.-C.: Angela Usher holds a doctorate from UC Davis in Nursing Research, is a licensed clinical social work with a specialty certification in oncology social work. She serves as the Manager of Supportive Oncology Services at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Supportive Oncology Services encompass psychiatry, palliative care, social work, nutrition, patient navigation, creative arts, child life, acupuncture, and education services for outpatient adults and pediatric hematology and oncology patients and families. Dr. Usher’s research focus is on the psychosocial needs of cancer patients with an emphasis on social risks, financial hardship, distance to treatment, and rural disparities.
• Angelus T.W. Dupree, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.: Angelus Dupree holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Augusta State University, and a Masters in Social Work from Sacramento State University. He is a licensed clinical social worker in California and works at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center where his primary focus is on the support and care of pediatric and adult sickle cell patients. His role at UC Davis is under the Supportive Oncology Services Programs. This program encompasses psychiatry, palliative care, social work, nutrition, patient navigation, creative arts, child life, acupuncture, and education services of outpatient adults and families. He is also the owner and operator of CRiY Therapeutic Services, a counseling program that focuses on therapy services for varying population groups including teens, adults, families, couples, and individuals with chronic disease.
