Shaping Clinical Excellence: The Evolving Role of the Preceptor

This course provides established Transition to Practice Preceptors and experienced preceptors the opportunity to elevate their competency, strengthen their ability to support enhanced clinical reasoning in preceptees, utilize practical tools to guide preceptees throughout the preceptorship experience, and expand their knowledge of how the preceptor role continues to evolve in shaping clinical excellence. Key course focus areas include:

  • Use of a validated tool for assessing preceptor competency.
  • Awareness and integration of age diversity considerations.
  • Strategies to strengthen clinical reasoning and judgment in preceptees.
  • Application of the Tier Skills Acquisition Model (TSAM) within a specific care area.

This is a blended learning course that consists of two parts. Part 1 consists of an pre-class eLearning module that will take approximately 1 hour to complete. Part 2 is the in-person class that is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The total time commitment for this course is 4 hours.

This course is only open to UC Davis Health nursing staff designated as Transition to Practice Preceptors or who have completed the UC Davis Health Introduction to Preceptor course.

Part 1: Online Module

Before attending the in-person class, participants must complete one self-paced module. The following module will be assigned to your UC Learning Center account upon registration confirmation.

Part 2: In-Person Class

When the online module is complete, participants will attend an in-person class. Participants must bring verification of the module completion to class.
