The adrenal glands make several important hormones that support essential body functions. In people with adrenal insufficiency, the adrenal glands are not working correctly. This can be due to a problem with the adrenal glands themselves – in which case the condition is called Addison’s disease – or due to a problem with other glands and hormones that control the adrenals. Adrenal insufficiency can be present from birth but more often is acquired later during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
People with adrenal insufficiency require treatment with hormone medications, and missing these medications can lead to serious problems including death. Treatment should be closely monitored by an endocrinologist.
