Stem cell transplants are sometimes the only hope for life-threatening blood illnesses. In 30% of the cases, a patient will have a relative who is a match and can donate stem cells. That means the majority of cases will depend on the availability of a non-relative to serve as a matched donor. Collected cord blood units are another option.
All of this points to the importance of stem cell donors and the role they play in saving lives.
