“I seek to strengthen the APA’s engagement with and empowerment of communities to ensure organizational efforts center the needs of patients and families,” Johnson said. “I will also support the APA’s goal to develop diverse scholars and leaders to advance child health equity by investing in and developing members to improve systems, policies and practices that optimize child health outcomes and reduce inequities.”

Her responsibilities in the new role will include chairing Board of Directors meetings, representing the APA at its regional meetings, society and programmatic meetings and serving on the APA Executive Committee.

Johnson currently serves as a national mentor for the APA Young Investigator Award and New Century Scholars programs. She also co-chairs the APA Race in Medicine Special Interest Group. This group seeks to bring awareness to the role of race in the practice of medicine and to provide resources by which members can support the healthy development and optimal care of youth.

The Academic Pediatric Association (APA) is led and directed by a nine-member Board of Directors. Its mission is to nurture the academic success and career development of child health professionals engaged in research, advocacy, improvement science and educational scholarship to enhance the health and well-being of all children.
