Building a more sustainable health care model

UC Davis Health has received national awards for its leadership in sustainability and community investment.

UC Davis Health has earned national recognition for its leadership in sustainability and community well-being. This extends beyond environmental initiatives and supports a broader commitment to community health through its Anchor Institution Mission. The mission’s goal is to boost economically distressed communities in the region through local hiring, purchasing and investing.

This includes innovations in energy efficiency, waste reduction, transportation, purchasing, design and construction and clinical care.

Kristina Bair directs the UC Davis Health Sustainability Committee. The group works to create a resilient and sustainable health care model that celebrates the intersection between human and planetary health through community engagement and education.

“Sustainability is fundamentally about protecting and improving health,” Bair explained. “From energy and building design to food recovery and waste reduction, we’re finding innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint while creating a more resilient health care system for our community.”

Together, these initiatives, which align with the Anchor Institution Mission, are earning UC Davis Health national praise.

National awards highlight leadership

UC Davis Health recently received several significant awards for its sustainability progress:

SMUD’s First Clean Power City Business Champion Award

SMUD honored UC Davis Health with this award in recognition of the partnership between the two entities in the energy efficient design and planning of 48X and the Folsom Medical Care Clinic. The design innovations at these two facilities resulted in almost $200,000 in incentives, which created seed money for future sustainability improvement efforts.

Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus designation

The Arbor Day Foundation named UC Davis Health a 2025 Tree Campus for its commitment to using trees and green spaces to support human health, environmental sustainability and broader community well-being. This work includes expanding the campus tree canopy, planting drought-tolerant vegetation, eliminating synthetic herbicides and hosting community tree-planting events.

Practice Green Health Emerald Award

UC Davis Health earned this award in 2025 from Practice Green Health, which recognizes outstanding hospitals with advanced sustainability programs. UC Davis Health also received 2025 Circles of Excellence recognition in five categories: food, sustainable procurement, water, transportation and green building.

Bair emphasized the importance that collaboration played in these successes. “The progress we’re seeing is the result of collaboration across our organization,” she said.

Sustainability in action

The reusable utensil kits debuted in 2025 at the Scrubs East Café.

Examples of this collaborative sustainability work include:

Expanding the tree canopy

In 2025, the UC Davis Health’s Grounds Department planted more than 500 trees across the campus. This enhances air quality, provides more shade in public areas, reduces heat and creates healthier outdoor environments in the surrounding area.

Diverting food to families in need

UC Davis Health’s Food and Nutrition Services donates excess prepared food through our partnership with COPIA, a resource that connects surplus food to those who need it most. In fiscal year 2024-2025, UC Davis Health donated 16,898 pounds of food. This combats food insecurity within our community and reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfills — a major source of methane emissions.

Reducing single-use plastics

The Sustainability Committee is also working to cut back on single-use plastics. These efforts include the design and distribution of a reusable utensil kit for UC Davis Health employees. The Reusable Flatware Initiative debuted at Scrubs East Café in 2025 and resulted in the distribution of more than 4,000 kits. As a result, nearly 9,000 fewer disposable utensils were purchased when compared to the previous year. The project will continue in 2026 with distribution at Lawrence Ellison Café in the Ambulatory Care Center.

The reusable utensil kits are a big hit with employees. Thanks to their adoption, nearly 9,000 fewer disposable utensils were purchased in 2025.

One of the Sustainability Committee’s long-term goals is a fossil fuel-free future. The plan is to electrify the health system’s central plant by 2045 and purchase clean energy through SMUD. This would make UC Davis Health a zero net emissions operating campus, which would achieve a 90% emissions reduction, while improving air quality for the UC Davis Health campus and surrounding Sacramento community.

The Sustainability Committee will also host Earth Day events in April for staff and students, including events focused on green commuting and a sustainability walking tour.

Each year, nearly 230,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer and many learn of their diagnosis only after the disease has advanced. But there is good news: Low-dose CT screening can find lung cancer early — when it is most treatable and even curable.

This year, the award celebrates someone intimately connected to the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Aron King, a 2021 Master of Science in Leadership graduate and fourth-year PhD student in Nursing Science and Health Care Leadership, has been named a Young Alumni Award recipient.

King’s resume spans clinical leadership, community-building and scholarship, including the role of assistant nurse manager at UC Davis Health. Earlier this year, he stepped into a new leadership position as the Magnet Program director at Kaiser Permanente Antioch.

Along the way, he has become a visible advocate for health care representation and mental health. He has been a driving force within the Capitol City Black Nurses Association (CCBNA), an organization he helped grow from a small chapter into a nationally recognized community hub.

“Aron is an exceptional nurse, doctoral student, community member and role model for the profession of nursing,” said Associate Dean Piri Ackerman, who has worked closely with King in his academic and community pursuits. “He has an extraordinary ability to bring people together. He takes risks to open dialogue to accomplish his goal of increasing inclusion in nursing and advancing health equity.”

Piri Ackerman, left, nominated Aron King because of his “extraordinary ability to bring people together.”

A leader who ‘calls people in’

King’s leadership is deeply aligned with the School of Nursing’s mission — especially its emphasis on optimal health for everyone, community connection and innovation.

“Aron exemplifies the core values of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing through the relationships he builds in the community, his commitment to health for all people, including underserved populations, and the way he collaborates with people who are too often overlooked by traditional systems,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “His work engaging Black men in wellness conversations reflects deep listening, empathy and collaboration with those directly impacted.”

That work comes to life through programs such as Barbershop Health Talks — a community education effort he helped create. These are spaces designed to meet people where they are and build trust through conversation, peer support and practical health education. King has seen how quickly the right setting can unlock engagement. It led to the focus of his dissertation, “Cut to the Chase.”

“Once you start sharing health statistics, the guys are like, ‘We need to get more information like this out there.’ It’s just a huge disconnect,” he explained.

What began as virtual programming for Black men during the COVID pandemic grew into sustained community momentum in barbershops, including turnout that surprised even him.

“I didn’t know if we were going to get people to come for group therapy at 6 p.m. on a Thursday night,” he recalled. “We had like 30 people show up, and I was like, ‘Whoa.’”

Among the fewer than 1% of Black male nurses in the nation, King shared his experiences on the national documentary, “Everybody’s Work: Healing what hurts us all.” He illustrated how he has taken a collaborative impact approach to diversifying the nursing workforce by demonstrating what can be done beyond the bedside.

Aron King’s works to advance mental and social wellbeing for Black men in Sacramento evolved from talks in barbershops to his dissertation focus.

‘I do it for the cause, not the applause’

King is quick to connect recognition to responsibility.

“All the awards that I’ve received, I hadn’t applied for. People nominated me,” he said. “It’s recognition of your impact and how you’re making a difference. But I do it for the cause, not the applause.”

That mindset, paired with mentorship and opportunity at UC Davis, helped transform early uncertainty of his professional motivations and personal “why,” into clarity of purpose.

“Health care doesn’t just happen in the hospital,” he said. “Health care is everywhere. I want to be the resource that I wish I had.”

As he prepares to graduate this June from the nursing school’s doctoral program, King is already thinking beyond the dissertation. His long-term vision is bold and, not surprisingly, centered on community.

“Instead of looking at how we could get health into the barbershop,” he said, “why don’t we bring the barbershop into the clinic?”

The award isn’t a finish line for King. It’s a signal that the work matters and that the next chapter should be even bigger. Something the alumni association surely recognizes.

Award winners will be celebrated at a gala on May 7 at the Walter Buehler Alumni Center.

“It still hasn’t settled in,” she said. “It’s too big.”

Singh is the director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice — Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) Program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Her selection marks the first time a faculty member from the school has earned a Fulbright — one of the most competitive international exchange awards in the world.

The selection carries a deeply personal weight. It is not only recognition of her work, Singh said, but confirmation that the work had mattered.

For years, Singh questioned whether she was even worthy of applying to the prestigious program. Those doubts followed her despite nearly two decades in academia, years of clinical practice and a career shaped by developing an expertise in pediatrics, maternal and infant health.

For Charleen Singh, being named a Fulbright scholar confirms her career decisions put her on the right track to expand her international impact and bring new perspectives back to her students.

She had spent much of her nursing career at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, helping develop best practices in pediatric wound and ostomy care. Her doctoral research focused on pediatric nursing interventions and pressure injuries. Her clinical experience stretches from Canada down the West Coast, across hospitals and clinics in Seattle, the Bay Area and Southern California.

Still, it took time before she felt ready to apply.

“These were things I wanted to do anyway,” she said. “Teaching. Research. Engaging with people.”

When a panel of reviewers she had never met said yes, the meaning was immediate.

“It was the first time I thought, ‘Everything I’ve done really did matter.’”

What a Fulbright represents

The Fulbright Program is one of the most selective international exchange programs in the world. Each year, a limited number of scholars are chosen for specific countries and disciplines, based on where academic and cultural exchange is expected to have the greatest impact.

Fulbright Scholars are selected not only for their credentials, but for trust. The program chooses people who can work independently, translate ideas across cultures and engage meaningfully with host communities, then bringing that knowledge back home.

“This Fulbright represents more than an individual honor. It signals the growing international reach of our school and the strength of faculty like Dr. Singh, whose work advances nursing education and health scholarship across borders,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “We are proud of her leadership and the example she sets for global engagement.”

For Singh, the selection reflected the full arc of her work: teaching across nursing programs, remaining active in clinical practice until recently, publishing with international collaborators and presenting globally on pediatric wound care.

Charleen Singh, an expert in pediatric care, during a recent health care outreach visit to the Philippines.

“Someone looked at the whole picture,” she said. “And said it all counted.”

That recognition still feels unreal.

“I didn’t expect to be selected,” she said. “Even now, I’m still processing it.”

Five months of immersion in Indonesia

Singh’s Fulbright will take her to Indonesia for approximately five months. From her base at the University of Indonesia, she will teach across undergraduate, graduate and PhD nursing programs, working closely with faculty in pediatrics, maternal health and family care.

Unlike her previous short-term international visits, this experience is designed for immersion.

“This isn’t two weeks and then leaving,” she said. “It’s being part of one community for months.”

Although Singh will complete intensive language training, she will teach in English, with course materials translated into Indonesian. As the only nursing Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia this cycle, she will also be able to engage in clinical outreach, develop educational or health programs and participate in international conferences. Time at the end of her stay is reserved for scholarship and writing.

Fulbright Scholars like Charleen Singh, seen here in Jakarta, are chosen for specific countries and disciplines, based on the location’s academic and cultural needs.

Throughout the experience, Singh will continue serving as director of the Sacramento-based DNP-FNP program, leading preceptorship efforts and clinical operations remotely. She hopes to bring back new partnerships, create new opportunities for faculty and students and forge deeper global connections.

What she already carries with her is something quieter.

“For a long time, I wasn’t sure if I was good enough,” she said. “And especially now with the profession of nursing facing challenges across the country, being accepted for the Fulbright reaffirms the value of nursing.”

The award cognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s Healthy Work Environment Standards. The AACN recognized a record 580 units from more than 300 hospitals that sought the Beacon Award for Excellence in 2025.

Award-winning units meet AACN criteria that recognize supportive work environments where nurses can drive clinical excellence.

Silver-level recipients also demonstrate ongoing staff development and quality improvement to achieve optimal patient care.

AACN President Rebekah Marsh praised unit teams that achieved the Beacon Award for Excellence for their dedication to providing safe, patient-centered and evidence-based care to patients and families.

“Congratulations to our AACN Beacon teams for showing what nurses can do when we practice in a healthy work environment,” she said. “This meaningful recognition is more than a point of pride; it demonstrates a commitment to cultivating a thriving workplace, one in which nurses and other team members are empowered to make their optimal contributions.”

About the Beacon Award for Excellence

Established in 2003, AACN’s award recognizes top hospital units that meet standards of excellence in recruitment and retention; education, training and mentoring; research and evidence-based practice; patient outcomes; leadership and organizational ethics; and creation of healthy work environments. Award criteria, which measure systems, outcomes and environments against evidence-based national criteria for excellence, provide a mechanism to enhance patient safety efforts.

Augustine Saiz with his Gold Medal for outstanding research.

Long before traveling to the Swiss Alps, the foundation for this victory was built in the lab. A recipient of the prestigious K08 award from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Saiz is dedicated to solving the biological puzzles of fracture repair.

His lab is currently leading critical studies on how polytrauma — severe injuries to multiple body parts — creates systemic effects that alter fracture repair. They are also investigating the localized impact of muscle injury on bone regeneration.

The winning research

Saiz secured the top honor for his presentation titled: "Hydrogel Co-Delivery of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Disordered Peptides Attenuates the Early Local Inflammatory Response and Improves Fracture Healing in Polytrauma."

The research team explored whether a new type of gel could help the body heal broken bones after severe injuries. The gel contains hyaluronic acid, a natural material already used in some medical treatments, along with mesenchymal stem cells and a lab‑designed protein called P2.

P2 was engineered to act like osteocalcin, a protein the body uses to build and maintain healthy bone. In a murine model of multiple traumas, the combination of P2 and stem cells helped reduce the intense inflammation that often follows major injuries and slows bone healing.

The study found that P2 sends steady, bone‑building signals at the fracture site, while the stem cells help calm inflammation. Used together, they sped up bone repair, produced more consistent healing and supported the growth of stronger, healthier bone. This work was recently published in The Journal of Tissue Engineering.

Building a global network

The AO Trauma Research Olympiad is a premier global event designed to connect the next generation of thought leaders. Saiz was one of only 10 early-career surgeons selected worldwide to present their work to a panel of distinguished experts.

Beyond the podium, the event served as a forum for building an international network. As a finalist, he gained exclusive access to the AO Research Institute and the AO Innovation Technology Center. He spent time connecting with fellow researchers, discussing future fellowship opportunities, and attending the renowned AO Davos Courses alongside more than 300 faculty members and 1,000 participants.

The Society for Neuroscience honors UC Davis researcher with top early career award

UC Davis neuroscientist Maitreyee Wairagkar was awarded The Society for Neuroscience’s early career award, in recognition of her outstanding research on brain-computer interface.

The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) has honored UC Davis neuroscientist Maitreyee Wairagkar with the prestigious Peter and Patricia Gruber International Research Award in Neuroscience. This award recognizes neuroscientists with outstanding research and educational pursuit in an international setting.

SfN recognized three neuroscientists with this year’s research award. Wairagkar, a project scientist at the UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab, received the award for her groundbreaking work on an intracortical “brain-to-voice” brain-computer interface (BCI).

The new BCI technology enables real-time voice synthesis. It uses artificial intelligence to decode neural activity measure with electrodes placed inside the brain. The BCI has allowed a man with ALS to speak expressively through a computer in a voice similar to his own, a breakthrough that received international attention. The system also has the ability to modulate intonation and pitch, with no perceptible delay. This marks a major step toward naturalistic communication.

Brain-computer interface revolutionizing communication

This BCI work also represents one of the first scientific explorations of how prosody (the melody in speech) is encoded in the firing rates of individual neurons. Wairagkar and her colleagues explored how neurons in the brain work to create the rhythm and intonation patterns of speech. These dimensions of speech convey essential layers of meaning in a conversation, such as emotional state and nuanced intent.

Breakthroughs like these are engaging public curiosity and capital investors at historically high levels.

“We are in a very interesting phase where decades of academic BCI research and recent acceleration in industry effort have started to demonstrate real benefit of BCI for people with paralysis,” Wairagkar said. “This is an exciting time for early career neuroscience researchers to pursue bold ideas.”

UC Davis Health is the only University of California academic medical center and one of just two hospitals in Sacramento to achieve this designation.

“At UC Davis Health we see substance use disorders as a disease rather than someone with a problem. We aim to provide patients with this condition evidence-based treatment, just as we would treat other diseases like diabetes or hypertension,” said Sarah Berglund, opioid stewardship pharmacist in the Department of Pharmacy Services. “This recognition reflects our commitment to address substance use disorders and provide compassionate treatment that supports the health and safety of our community.”

UC Davis Health is a leader in California and across the nation in addressing substance use disorders. Efforts around this work include:

“It is critical that hospitals are prepared to actively treat patients with substance use disorders when they come to us for care,” Berglund added.

Each year, the Cal Hospital Compare Opioid Honor Roll sends out a survey to all California acute care hospitals to evaluate their opioid safety and prescribing practices. The survey evaluates hospitals on their substance use disorder care activities, including:

Safe and effective opioid use

Identifying and treating patients with substance use disorders

Strategies to reduce harm

Steps to reduce stigma

Ways to involve patient and families in the decision-making process

The goal of the Cal Hospital Compare program is to increase access to addiction treatment for hospitalized patients and reduce substance use disorder-related deaths.

In 1981, Wintemute provided emergency care in war-torn Cambodia — an experience that shaped his path in violence prevention. (Courtesy G. Wintemute)

Wintemute is a distinguished professor of emergency medicine and the Susan P. Baker-Stephen P. Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at UC Davis Health. He directs the Centers for Violence Prevention, which includes the California Firearm Violence Research Center and the Violence Prevention Research Program.

Election to NAM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

The academy welcomed Wintemute as a leading researcher in firearm injury prevention, spanning more than four decades. “He brilliantly translates research findings to inform and evaluate gun violence policies and initiatives that are the basis of major policies at the state and federal levels,” NAM said in its announcement.

NAM is one of three advisory institutions that make up the nonprofit National Academies.

The class inducted this year “represents the most exceptional researchers and leaders in health and medicine, who have made significant breakthroughs, led the response to major public health challenges and advanced health equity,” said NAM President Victor J. Dzau.

Trip to Cambodia sets course for violence prevention

Wintemute attended medical school and completed his residency in family medicine at UC Davis. In 1981, he spent five months working in western Cambodia with the American Refugee Committee, in partnership with the Red Cross. At the time, the region was still devastated from the Khmer Rouge genocide. Amid gunfire and landmine explosions, Wintemute provided emergency medical care in a makeshift 120-bed hospital, sometimes performing amputations with only local anesthetics.

The experience profoundly shaped his understanding of the impact of violence on communities, families and individuals — ultimately steering him toward a career in public health and violence prevention.

After Cambodia, Wintemute attended Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and received a Master of Public Health degree in 1983.

He came back to Sacramento and began working as a UC Davis physician that same year.

Soon after, Wintemute began publishing violence prevention research, including a 1987 paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “When Children Shoot Children.”

Since then, Wintemute has authored and co-authored more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles focused primarily on violence prevention.

Garen J. Wintemute, a nationally recognized expert in gun violence prevention, is mentoring a new generation of violence prevention researchers.

New center focuses on violence prevention

In 1991, Wintemute launched the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis.

In 1996, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stopped funding the program as a result of the Dickey Amendment, Wintemute used his own money over the subsequent years to keep the program going.

Wintemute has continued to work in the Emergency Department at UC Davis Medical Center, conduct innovative research, and mentor a new generation of violence prevention researchers.

His approach — treating violence as a health problem — continues to influence the field of violence prevention. The researchers emphasize data-driven analysis to understand and reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths.

Recent funding for the research has come from the CDC, the California Wellness Foundation, the Fund for a Safer Future, the Heising-Simons Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the State of California.

Research from the Centers for Violence Prevention has examined community violence, extreme risk protection orders (sometimes known as red flag laws), suicide prevention, mass shootings, intimate partner violence, ghost guns, alcohol-related violence and more.

A globally recognized organization, FACT sets standards for high quality medical and laboratory practices in transplantation and cellular therapies.

This is the first year the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program has received FACT accreditation since the program was rejuvenated in 2023.

The dual reaccreditation affirms that UC Davis Health continuously meets or exceeds international standards for stem cell collections, processing and complete care during the patient’s entire transplant journey.

“Serving the kids in our region is what drives us every day,” said Lisa Madden, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist who leads the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program at UC Davis Health. “It’s so rewarding.
Located at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program offers a full spectrum of transplant and cellular therapy options including autologous, allogeneic related and allogeneic unrelated donor transplants.
“FACT accreditation is a testament to the exceptional quality and dedication of our stem cell transplant teams,” said Joseph Tuscano, the UC Davis Health director of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy . “It assures our patients that UC Davis Health meets the highest international standards in cellular therapy — from initial evaluation through post-transplant care. This recognition reinforces UC Davis Health’s commitment to providing world-class, compassionate care right here in our community.”

The Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program is the only provider of pediatric stem cell transplantation in the Sacramento area. It offers advanced therapies for high-risk leukemia, hemoglobin disorders, metabolic diseases and immune deficiencies. The pediatric program benefits from the expertise and resources developed by the UC Davis Health adult stem cell transplant and the Regenerative Cures at UC Davis Health colleagues.

FACT is the only accrediting agency that addresses all quality aspects of cellular therapy and cord blood banking including collection, processing, and administration. UC Davis Health is one of 319 FACT accredited organizations in the U.S.

Mitchell Creinin, a UC Davis Health distinguished professor and director of the complex family planning fellowship, has received the Society of Family Planning Lifetime Achievement Award.

Created in 2005, the award is for individuals and/or teams who have dedicated their careers to advancing the science of abortion and contraception, and have supported others in achieving their own success.

Creinin's lifetime of research has focused on new contraceptive technologies, management of miscarriage, and abortion techniques, all aimed to improve the quality of care available to patients in the U.S. and in lower and middle-income countries.

“I have always worked with the idea that I can help an individual patient and I can also help countless others with important research so we can all provide better care,” Creinin said. “I value that so much of the work I have done, with many collaborators, is present in how abortion and contraceptive care is provided throughout the world.”

Creinin has been at UC Davis since 2011, having previously spent 17 years at the University of Pittsburgh where he served as the director of family planning and the director of gynecologic specialties. He also held an appointment as a professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

Creinin has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, USAID, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, private foundations and industry, which has enabled his continued involvement in abortion technologies and female and male contraceptive development, including medical and safety oversight of national and international trials. Creinin has been an innovator in abortion methodologies and miscarriage management. He has authored more than 300 peer-review papers, review articles, book chapters and books related to family planning and contraception, including the sixth edition of “Speroff & Darney’s Clinical Guide to Contraception.”

Creinin is a founding member of the Society of Family Planning and served on its executive board from 2004-2011, including his stint as society president from 2007-2009.

Creinin will be honored at the Society of Family Planning annual meeting on Oct. 26, 2025.

Improving health outcomes by connecting with patients on a cultural level

The 2025 Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Resident/Fellow Inclusive Excellence and Equity Award was presented to Debby Lee, a trainee in internal medicine.

Smiling woman in traditional Hmong clothing sits on a blanket over grass. She is holding a parasol decorated with floral designs

Lee, who is of Hmong descent, is passionate about serving communities underserved in health care.

“My parents came to the U.S. as Hmong refugees after the Vietnam War,” Lee said. “I’ve always been passionate about improving representation in medicine.”

Her commitment to better inform and transform the medical field through culturally sensitive care — treating people with respect for their culture, traditions, and beliefs, so they feel understood — has not gone unnoticed.

Lee recently received the 2025 Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Resident/Fellow Inclusive Excellence and Equity Award for her many efforts to advance health equity at UC Davis Health and its School of Medicine.

Debby Lee received the 2025 Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Resident/Fellow Inclusive Excellence and Equity Award as she was completing her internal medicine residency.

“Dr. Lee has shown exceptional and sustained dedication to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion through her clinical care, community engagement and educational leadership,” noted the team that gave the award. “Her work embodies the spirit and mission of this prestigious award, recognizing individuals who go above and beyond to promote equity in medicine.”

Lee received the award in May, while completing her residency training in internal medicine. She has since been working as a primary care physician at the UC Davis Health Midtown clinic. She said she’s been given a meaningful opportunity with the hepatology clinic to treat patients with hepatitis B and other liver diseases.

“It is important for me to advance health equity because I’ve seen how cultural and language barriers affect my community, and I want to give back by helping bridge that gap to improve health outcomes,” Lee said. “My goal is to end hepatitis B, starting with my Hmong community which is disproportionately affected.”

Advancing health equity is a goal shared by health care providers across the country who seek to ensure that people of all backgrounds have access to the care they need, feel welcome in health care settings and are treated fairly.

Studies over the years have shown that patients who share a common culture or language with their doctor leads to improved management of chronic conditions and fewer hospitalizations, among other health benefits.

“Diversity, equity and inclusion in health care,” Lee said, “help break down cultural and language barriers, build trust, and improve outcomes for communities like mine.”

The award was presented by leaders from three organizations: Graduate Medical Education, the Office of Student and Resident Diversity, and the Resident Medical Staff Committee.

The selection committee stated several reasons why Lee was chosen for the award, including her:

Mentorship in the UC Davis Health Equity Academy, a pathway program to encourage high school students from underserved communities pursue careers in health care.

Devotion to DICE, the internal medicine diversity, inclusion and community engagement committee.

Leadership in organizing outreach and social events for residency applicants as well as mentorship of medical students.

Commitment to screening high-risk immigrant groups for hepatitis B, including oversight of translation projects to share educational materials in Hmong and Mien.

Volunteerism with HALO community clinic, which serves vulnerable patients in Sacramento County.

The selection committee also selected two runners up for the award: Alexis Woods of general surgery and Elif Duran of psychiatry.

The award is named for Ifeanyi Onyeji, a UC Davis Health urology resident who died in 2022. He stood out for his ceaseless dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion in graduate medical education — values that UC Davis Health embraces.

“I feel very honored to have been nominated for this award,” Lee said. “Dr. Onyeji was a phenomenal individual and I am humbled to be part of his legacy.”

This marks the 14th consecutive year UC Davis Medical Center has earned the top spot locally. The medical center was also named the No. 7 hospital in California, continuing an 11-year streak of being ranked in the state’s top 10.

“This year’s rankings are a testament to our unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality care across California — transforming lives and strengthening communities,” said Michael Condrin, interim chief executive officer for UC Davis Health. “Our success is driven by the exceptional dedication of the entire UC Davis Health team, who consistently go above and beyond to provide patient-centered care without parallel.”

Excellence in specialty care, procedures and conditions

UC Davis Medical Center ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationwide in six specialties:

Believing in better

Last year, U.S. News & World Report introduced a “Community Access” badge to recognize hospitals that serve vulnerable and historically underserved populations, particularly those facing socioeconomic challenges.

This year, UC Davis Medical Center was one of just 76 hospitals nationwide to receive recognition as a best regional hospital for community access.

“We believe the ability to live a healthy life should be a right enjoyed by every person. That’s why we’re committed to inspiring better health for all,” shared Condrin. “Research shows that health is shaped by more than medical care, it’s influenced by access to jobs, housing, healthy food, and clean air. We’re working to address these factors and move our community closer to true health equity.”

Erik Orlando Fernandez y Garcia celebrates with the graduating TEACH-MS students at the UC Davis School of Medicine commencement on May 17, 2025.

Fernandez y Garcia has been an active teacher in countless areas. He’s dedicated to graduate medical education with “bedside teaching” in both the newborn nursery and outpatient clinical sites and has spent years focusing on health services research. He has connected hundreds of medical students and residents to local organizations to learn more about maintaining optimal health for all children in the Sacramento region, but especially those in underserved areas.

Fernandez y Garcia — who was born and raised in Sacramento — is also the academic coach for TEACH-MS, the four-year program for medical students who aspire to become doctors in undeserved, urban settings. TEACH-MS is short for Transforming Education and Community Health for Medical Students. Fernandez y Garcia trains students how to better connect with their patients and become fierce advocates for them.

We caught up with Fernandez y Garcia to learn more about his passion for teaching and mentoring students and residents on how to serve the underserved.

What does it mean to be awarded the C. John Tupper Prize?

It is a great honor. Mostly though, I’m happy that students who have a passion and mission for service to the underserved can see someone being acknowledged who also shares that passion and mission — and for many of them, a similar background.

How does being a Sacramento native influence what you teach and coach?

I came to UC Davis to help teach people who would be learning and serving in my community. So, being here influences every part of my teaching and coaching. For example, I tell all of my learners that they are learning to be doctors ‘by caring for my friends and family’ and that that is a great responsibility.

What’s your priority as an academic coach, and how do you go about that?

When I meet my new cohort of medical students every year, I tell them that my job as a coach is to help them identify their goals and then help them achieve those goals, all while keeping their passion for their mission intact, if not stronger.

Do you have a certain philosophy or foundational beliefs that you strive to bring into the learning environment?

I practice under the paradigm of Cultural Humility, which has three tenets (as defined in the original published definition):

Lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique

Redressing the power imbalances in the patient-physician dynamic

Developing mutually beneficial and ‘nonpaternalistic’ clinical and advocacy partnerships with communities on behalf of individuals and defined populations

What do you tell your students about the importance of the patient-doctor relationship, particularly when it comes to trust?

The foundation of Cultural Humility is trust. Patients and their families must trust that we have their best interests in mind when we treat them. Providers must trust that those we serve are invested in what we advise. Like any other deep relationship, without trust, there is no efficacy.

Medicine is changing fast, especially on the national policy level. How does this affect what, how or why you teach?

There are challenges to our model of the “medical home' for organizing care, especially with regard to access. These challenges are especially problematic for underserved communities who already face increasing barriers to optimal health. My teaching has to involve how to navigate the myriad and siloed patchwork of systems to help patients and families do the best that they can in this environment. I also teach students to remain a positive light for these patients and families despite what are seemingly disheartening and insurmountable obstacles.

A highlight of Professor Erik Orlando Fernandez y Garcia’s job is to mentor TEACH-MS students who aspire to be doctors in medically underserved and urban settings.

Improving outcomes, reducing COPD flare-ups: How respiratory therapists are transforming outpatient care

Krystal Craddock discusses her award-winning paper that evaluated the benefits of respiratory therapists in the COPD clinic, which has drastically improved patient outcomes.

Krystal Craddock has received a prestigious literary award for her research on a groundbreaking care model that relies on using respiratory therapists in the Comprehensive COPD Clinic at UC Davis Health.

Child with green shirt being fitted with oxygen mask by respiratory therapist.

Her recognition — the 2025 Mallinckrodt Literary Award — was based on a paper she wrote that evaluated the benefits of embedding respiratory therapists (RTs) into a dedicated COPD clinic — a practice UC Davis Health adopted years before other health systems. The study found that having RTs in the outpatient setting led to significant improvements in patient symptoms and flare-ups and a notable reduction in hospitalizations, highlighting the value of RT-led interventions in chronic disease management.

The Mallinckrodt Literary Award is presented annually for the best paper by a first-time author published in Respiratory Care, the official scientific journal of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

Craddock, a longtime respiratory therapist, is the University of California Asthma Network (UCAN) and Reversible Obstructive Airways Disease (ROAD) Biologics Clinic Coordinator. We spoke with Craddock recently about the significance of her research, the COPD clinic’s work and the growing importance of respiratory therapists in outpatient care.

What does winning the 2025 Mallinckrodt Literary Award mean to you?

It was incredibly surprising — a literary award is such a tremendous honor. I was honestly in shock when I found out I’d received it. But more than anything, I felt proud of the work we’ve done and the journey it took to get it published. It’s been a long road, and I’m deeply grateful to my mentors, especially the physician mentors who co-authored the paper with me. I’m humbled and appreciative of all the support along the way.

What inspired you to draft the article, “The Effect of Respiratory Therapist Case Managers Integrated into COPD Clinical Care”?

Few health systems have subspecialty pulmonary clinics with RTs working with adults in the outpatient setting — most RTs focus on pediatrics or inpatient settings. Our profession has been advocating to provide more value-based care, and our positive outcomes highlight the value RTs bring in improving quality of life and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions.

Is it unique to UC Davis Health to have RT case managers integrated into COPD clinical care?

UC Davis Health was one of the first to integrate RTs into the inpatient case management of COPD and asthma care. That program helped transition patients from hospital to home, significantly reducing 30-day readmissions for COPD exacerbations. Since then, similar models have spread nationwide.

We’ve since expanded this approach into the outpatient setting with a specialized COPD clinic, aiming to catch patients earlier and prevent hospitalizations. While these clinics are still rare, I hope this model will grow just as the inpatient RT programs did.

What is the role of RTs within the COPD clinic at UC Davis Health?

In our clinic, the RT is the first to see the patient before the pulmonologist. We conduct a comprehensive assessment — reviewing their current medications, past treatments and providing education. We also evaluate diagnostic data like pulmonary function tests, lab values, radiographic testing and symptom scores. After that, we present our findings and recommendations to the physician. After the physician further examines the patient, a comprehensive care plan is made using this team approach.

What do you believe RTs bring to COPD care that other clinicians may not be able to provide in the same way?

RTs are uniquely trained with a focused education on the cardiopulmonary system. While other health care professionals may study the entire body systemically, RTs specialize deeply in respiratory care from the start. That makes us especially well-prepared to manage diseases like COPD and asthma. It’s a natural fit — or as I like to say, a “plug and play” — to have an RT in a pulmonary clinic because we bring that specialized knowledge and skill set.

In your view, what aspect of RT involvement had the greatest impact on reducing CAT (COPD Assessment Test) scores and exacerbations?

The biggest impact came from the education we provided. Many patients don’t fully understand what COPD is or how to manage it. By reviewing their medications, checking adherence, and teaching them how to respond early to symptoms — like when they’re short of breath — we empowered them to act before things escalated. That early intervention helped prevent hospitalizations and improved their symptom scores.

What recommendations do you have for clinics or health systems looking to replicate this model?

I recommend making respiratory therapy a dedicated, full-time role in both inpatient and outpatient settings to specifically provide disease case management. While COVID highlighted the need for RTs in hospitals, their impact in outpatient care is just as critical — especially as health care shifted toward value-based models focused on preventing readmissions. RTs are not only effective in improving outcomes, but they’re also a cost-efficient option compared to other providers. There’s growing evidence and successful programs out there that show this model works, and it’s time more systems embraced it.

The McKnight Scholar Awards are granted to scientists in the early stages of establishing their own independent laboratories and research careers. Since the award was introduced in 1977, it has funded 291 innovative investigators and spurred hundreds of breakthrough discoveries. Each recipient will receive $75,000 per year for three years.

Sergey Stavisky is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. He co-directs the UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab. Stavisky studies the neural basis of human cognition and develops neurotechnologies to restore lost abilities. The lab's recent research focuses on using brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to restore speech to individuals who have lost the ability to speak due to neurological disease or injury. These BCIs also provide unique direct access to human neural circuits. This access allows researchers like Stavisky to gain a deeper neuroscientific understanding of the brain. This is essential for developing future therapies to treat conditions, such as language disorders, that affect uniquely human brain functions.

These neurons serve as a connection between muscles and mind and have traditionally been viewed as motion detectors that sense changes in muscle length and force to guide purposeful movement and reflexes. Using an integrative systems physiology approach that spans tissues and timescales, the Griffith lab is demonstrating that proprioceptors are more than motion detectors; in fact, they serve as key drivers of motor network development, maintenance and repair.

Scholars are appointed to a five-year term, renewable for a second five-year term after a successful progress evaluation. In addition, they take part in professional development to advance their leadership and mentorship skills.

Zhang’s laboratory studies the uterus’s remarkable capacity for scarless regeneration during the menstrual cycle as well as dynamic tissue remodeling during pregnancy, uncovering new insights into uterine disorders and tissue repair. Her group explores how the uterine inner lining breaks down and regrows each monthly cycle without scarring. By integrating these findings with studies on how the uterus and placenta sustain pregnancy, the Zhang lab aims to reveal new concepts and strategies for improving maternal-fetal outcomes, gynecological health and regenerative medicine.

UC Davis pediatric neurosurgeon receives national award for hydrocephalus research

Pediatric neurosurgeon Cameron Sadegh was selected for a Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award to develop a gene therapy for hydrocephalus in premature babies.

Hydrocephalus is a potentially fatal condition caused by the buildup of fluid in the brain. It results in abnormal brain pressure and injury to brain tissues. This condition is relatively common in premature babies and occurs in 1 in 1,000 live births.

Dr. Cameron Sadegh in his lab

Even with the best treatment options, the condition can lead to lifelong mental, cognitive and physical challenges and substantial costs.

UC Davis pediatric neurosurgeon Cameron Sadegh is working to change this outcome. He is developing a gene therapy that might improve quality of life for babies with hydrocephalus and other brain fluid disorders.

Sadegh is an assistant professor and physician-scientist in the Department of Neurological Surgery. His lab is at the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine in Shriners Children’s- North California.

Sadegh was recently selected to receive a 2024 Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award from The Hartwell Foundation. This award funds early-stage, innovative biomedical research that benefits children in the United States.

About hydrocephalus

Sadegh’s research will focus on hydrocephalus in premature babies. This condition is caused by a stroke within the deep brain structures. This causes bleeding in the brain.

To treat this condition, physicians need to decide whether to remove the blood clot or drain the fluid around it. While operating on these tiny brains carries high risks, leaving the blood clot to disintegrate may lead to toxic levels of minerals found in blood cells.

“The brains of extremely premature babies are at greatest risk of developing brain injuries due to blood clots. The breakdown of these clots results in brain fluid buildup and brain damage,” Sadegh explained.

Current therapies for hydrocephalus

Current hydrocephalus treatments aim to release the fluid buildup in the brain. They include surgeries to place a draining device in the brain to re-route the fluid. Surgeons are making an educated guess on the timing and selection of these treatment options.

“Premature babies need lifelong care to make sure the brain’s plumbing is working well. They often need many brain scans and surgeries, as there is always a risk of a device malfunction. The current treatments are far from ideal. We need new and lasting treatments for this life-altering condition.”

Developing the right permanent treatment

It is still a mystery how the brain maintains the right amount of fluid. The main structure that regulates brain fluid is the choroid plexus. This tissue in the middle of the brain represents a promising target for the new potential treatment.

Sadegh’s research will look at the NKCC1 gene, which expresses a key protein in the choroid plexus membrane. This protein facilitates the uptake of sodium, potassium and chloride ions into the cells. Its role is critical to the secretion and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

“When the blood clot disintegrates, the red blood cells pop, releasing extra potassium into the brain fluid. Too much potassium is extremely toxic to neurons,” Sadegh explained.

The gene therapy he is developing introduces potassium channels in the choroid plexus to help shuttle potassium out of the brain fluid. Water flows out with the potassium and thus leaves the brain.

Developing and testing the gene therapy

Sadegh has led the development of the first known gene therapy for treating hydrocephalus in a pediatric mouse model. The new award will help Sadegh test and optimize this therapy in a large animal model of hydrocephalus. He will also use donated human tissue to test if this approach works well in humans.

The objective is to replace the need to implant devices in the brain and help reduce brain injuries linked to high brain pressure.

“I hope to one day lead this gene therapy approach to a clinical trial in children. If successful, we could have a non-surgical cure for the most common type of hydrocephalus in America. It is an approach that might also be replicated to treat other neurologic conditions,” Sadegh said.

The Hartwell Foundation awards

Sadegh joins the ranks of UC Davis Health researchers Geoanna M. Bautista, Roy Ben-Shalom and Erin Brown who were previously selected for the Individual Biomedical Research Award. He is one of only ten scientists nationwide to receive this prestigious award this year. With this award, Sadegh will get $100,000 per year for three years.

“We are extremely proud of Dr. Sadegh’s selection for this Hartwell Foundation award,” said Kim E. Barrett, vice dean for research and distinguished professor of physiology and membrane biology. "He is an outstanding pediatric neurosurgeon, saving the lives of our tiniest and most vulnerable patients. His research is advancing knowledge of hydrocephalus and other disorders that involve bleeding in the brain, which should significantly reduce associated long term disabilities.”

The foundation will also fund a UC Davis postdoctoral researcher at $50,000 per year over two years. The researcher will pursue specialized training in biomedical research.

The Hartwell Foundation also selected UC Davis as one of the 2025 Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research. This selection considers the presence of a medical school and biomedical engineering program, as well as the quality and scope of ongoing biomedical research.

It is the most prestigious honor awarded by the Clinical Research (CR) Forum, a non-profit association of top clinical research experts and thought leaders from the nation’s leading academic health centers.

Brandman and his team were recognized for their groundbreaking work in developing a new brain-computer interface (BCI) that translates brain signals into speech with up to 97% accuracy — the most accurate system of its kind. Their work was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In February, the CR Forum selected Brandman for a 2025 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Award. This award honors 10 outstanding clinical research studies published in peer-reviewed journals in the previous year. The BCI study was recognized during the Awards ceremony on April 14.

“Our team is very honored by this recognition. It means a lot to us that our study was not only selected among the nation’s best published clinical research studies, but it has also won The Herbert Pardes Clinical Research Excellence Award!” said Brandman, co-director of the Neuroprosthetics Lab. He is an assistant professor in the UC Davis Department of Neurological Surgery.

The BCI study’s co-principal investigator is UC Davis Neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky. Stavisky is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery and co-director of the Neuroprosthetics Lab. The study’s lead author is Nicholas Card.
A brain-computer interface that translated brain signals to speech

The new BCI technology is being developed to restore communication for people who can’t speak due to paralysis or neurological conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It can interpret brain signals when the user tries to speak and turns them into text that is “spoken” aloud by the computer.

In July 2023, Brandman implanted sensors in the brain of a man with severely impaired speech due to ALS. The man was able to communicate his intended speech within minutes of activating the system.

“Our work demonstrates the most accurate speech neuroprosthesis (device) ever reported. The technology is transformative because it provides hope for people who want to speak but can’t. I hope that technology like this speech BCI will help future patients speak with their family and friends,” Brandman said.

The Herbert Pardes Clinical Research Excellence Award

The Herbert Pardes Clinical Research Excellence Award is named in honor of CR Forum Board Vice Chair Herbert Pardes for his profound impact on clinical research and academic medicine. It is awarded to the research study that best shows a high degree of innovation and creativity, advances science, and has an impact upon human disease.

“This study is spectacular, in that not only can this man communicate with his family and maintain his livelihood, but he is actually able to speak using recordings of his own voice ,” said Harry P. Selker, chair of the Clinical Research Forum and dean of Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Tufts University.

UC Davis Health Vice Dean for Research Kim E. Barrett nominated Brandman for this award.

"The work done by Dr. Brandman and his team, including his research partner Sergey Stavisky, has been nothing short of remarkable. The technologies they have developed offer real hope to change the lives of those who have been robbed of their power to speak intelligibly by diseases such as ALS,” said Barrett, distinguished professor of physiology and membrane biology at UC Davis.

The BCI study is part of a BrainGate2 clinical trial. The trial is still enrolling participants. Brandman is the trial’s site-responsible principal investigator. A complete list of study’s coauthors and funders is available in the New England Journal of Medicine article.

The award comes with a $7,500 prize.
